Debuting in May, HBO Films’ THE WIZARD OF LIES examines Bernie Madoff’s Ponzi scheme – his deception, lies and cover-up, all as the financier’s wife and sons are catapulted into a harsh and unrelenting spotlight.

Robert De Niro (Oscar® winner for “Raging Bull” and “The Godfather II”) comes to HBO for the first time in the role of family patriarch Bernie Madoff. Also on HBO for the first time, Michelle Pfeiffer (Golden Globe winner for “The Fabulous Baker Boys”) stars as Ruth Madoff, Bernie’s longtime spouse and unwitting partner during the events that would lead to financial ruin for countless people and institutions, as well as his and his family’s destruction.

The film is directed by Barry Levinson from a script by Sam Levinson and John Burnham Schwartz and Samuel Baum.

From seeing the previews before the Leftovers I kinda thought this was going to be an original series. Will it be worth the watch or just make you hate Madoff?

They use RL footage of interviews with him in prison to set the tone, and focus more on the person he was rather than the crimes he committed.

Airs tonight 8PM EST

Madoff was a sociopath. Still is.

I'm in the middle of it now, it's good not great. I'd give it a 7 so far. Michelle Pfieffer is still doable

The real question wull always remain, how much did the brother, wife and sons know, or at least suspect, prior to the downfall.

If seems almost impossible the brother and sons were not privy to the deception but there is always the possibility that unbridled privilege produces convenient stupidity.

Bernie was a real POS.

I would like to have it seen it cover more of the rise than just the after math of the fall

Thought it was ok to good. I'd give it a 6.5/10 for a TV movie.

De Niro was great as Madoff, but the storyline/plot wasn't super exciting.

I mean, the Bernie Madoff story isn't really that sexy or exciting at all. He is truly evil, yes, but his crime doesn't make for an exciting movie. His downfall was even less exciting, in terms of movie potential. I knew that going in and was able to enjoy the movie.

It is an important story and deserves to be told.

it was not terrible by any means.

I would give it a 6.5-7

didnt realize his son committed suicide, and the other son died. I felt bad for Ruth.

Well a lot of that has been covered and told, maybe I was expecting too much, but I thought ABC did a better job with their miniseries.
