I remember they did the amputation thing on someone in the prison but can't remember if it worked or not.

They did. It was on dale and he survived.....all the way until post prison I believe. He ended up being killed by a hoard when they met up with the group going to DC

Dale died via a zombie attack. He let his guard down when Carl killed Ben. Well he would have died or turn.
He did get abducted by the hunters....well cannibals.....and infected them. He was shot in the head by Andrea.

Oh yeah that's right. He lost his leg because the hunters ate it. lol regained consciousness and started laughing at them. "Surprise, I'm infected, the joke's on you!"

That's not the complete story of leg amputations.
COMIC SPOILERS
Dale's was the 2nd amputation.
Allen, got the ankle bite early in the prison arc. They cut off his leg, but he died from the bloodloss, while I believe Dale survived because they stopped the bleeding quickly (think they did it in the infirmary, and I think they had the doctor from that town)
About the cannibals eating Infected Dales other leg, he wakes up and says "TAINTED MEAT! TAINTED MEAT!"

I think it depends on if it has enough time to spread or something. The same thing happened to Morgan and he died and came back, but it could have been to blood loss.

Maybe cauterize the wound with fire once you amputate? That worked in Day of the Dead.

I've read where he said that was his biggest regret in the comics and made it a point not to incorporate into the show.

I hope it's similar, because I thought that was a great humanizing moment for the Governor's forces. "You made me shoot a baby!" You see things from their perspective, and they aren't monsters... only the Governor is.

Hopefully they keep the arena or whatever it was called that the governor has setup as entertainment. I thought that was hilarious when reading.
