I just finished watching Narcos and really liked the show. Might have to get a book on the whole story and read it for accuracy, but I just have one question:
Did he, in real life, always dress like a special-needs person?

He came from humble beginnings and was in a dirt poor country. Fashion wasn't a big deal to him.

Also remember it's the 80s, that is the shite people wore then, he looks Like something a 45 yr old dad would have on at Disney World in 1987 or something...dude didn't walk around in expensive outfits and designer suits like the Cali guys did...he was basically just a poor street thug that through sheer violence and indimidation became THE kingpin.

He was also pretty brilliant.

He was a hero to the people in his area of Colombia. He pumped a ton of money into the community, built schools, soccer fields, etc. Ironically, he also ended the decades of violence and crime in his community because there were no competing criminals left and if you committed a crime you knew Pablo would come after you, which you did not want.

This admiration he created gave him a protective layer in Colombia. Millions of people had his back.

In the end, his stubborness led to his demise. If he had just coasted, not joined politics, etc. he'd probably still be in charge.

Killing Pablo - Mark Bowden is the best book on the subject.

The US was never going to let him coast. He became the symbol of the War on Drugs. He was a well known target. It was his defiance that was his demise. He didn't join politics, he just persuaded it by extreme acts of violence like blowing up airliners. No way was he ever going to be still around. The US had already invaded Panama to get their leader.

Yeah he was going to go down regardless...Reagan didn't frick around, he was a total wolf in sheep's clothing and once he had his mind made up, said party was going down. Hell, they even took down the Cali Cartel and they even tried to stay out of the limelight as much as possible...

Of course in destroying all the Columbian Cartels that were seen as somewhat honorable (honorable being a relative term) and kind of consolidated, it gave rise to the Mexicans and their cartels... Which are far more uncontrollable and basically impossible to defeat.

He became a symbol because he wanted to be. He refused to be a quiet hand behind everything.

The US was not going to do shite until he became the international figure head for drug trafficking intentionally.

Umm he was elected to congress. That's joining politics. And he was intentionally in the spotlight.

Not really. As much as his cartel was moving, he had no choice. The US was going after him.

The US didn't do a lot of things until Reagan actually declared war on drugs. By then, everybody knew who he was.

I guess in a sense you're right but "elected" (you forgot the quotes)as an alternate and it was a farce as much as him negotiating his jailtime to his luxury palace. That was a move on his part to save his arse b/c that was his only legitimate play at the time and he was trying to avoid extradition to the US.

I think my favorite hearsay fact about Escobar is that he offered to pay off the US trade deficit
