I think it's fascinating that the one topic everyone on this board has a 100% black or white opinion on is one 15 second scene in a movie about girl baseball. It goes to show just how fun this board is and how good the people in the community are.
that being said, she totally dropped the ball on purpose and i'll fight to the death anyone who says otherwise!

From another board
During a montage of baseball footage of the Peaches, Dottie is shown catching balls by almost any means necessary (In splits, jumping into the dugout, behind her back, and other players running into her). She is capable of catching and hanging on to the ball.
It is also hinted that she may have done it intentionally based on many small hints during the movie (her talk with her grandsons, and the looks on Dottie's face when Kit is obviously shadowed by her).
I believe there is no right answer, it's left open for the the viewer to interpt the way they want too.. I believe Dottie let Kit win.

I hate responding in these, but I'm about to leave, so frick it.
If Dottie let Kit win, it ruins the movie. Everything Dottie stood for as a character is completely withdrawn if she dropped it on purpose. And no way she'd do that to her teammates either.
In the end, she finally gained respect for Kit and saw her as more of an equal because Kit had finally put in that extra "umph" and earned it.
People who say she dropped it on purpose are being intentionally obtuse.

What that she's a selfish, unhappy superstar that refuses to listen to anybody including her coach, and then abandons her team when they needed her most?
I think it fits right in with her character

When did Kit ever display a lack of "umph"? Kit always gave it her all, but she just couldn't overcome the talent level of her sister. And you said, "Dottie wouldn't do that to her teammates." I'm sorry but, a sister is more important than teammates. Teammates that she was eager to leave before even one season was complete.

Going back to a previous post that made a lot of sense regarding the conversation with the grandson at the beginning, I think it makes perfect sense. Kit strikes out on her own (no pun intended), Jimmy grows up and starts to actually care about his job, and Dottie realizes that she doesn't have to win every single thing to be happy. She finds happiness in her sister's happiness, even if Kit can't return the it. Character growth is a part of the movie too.

No kidding, Dottie wasn't this saint, she bailed on her teammates hardcore before. She screwed over her sister getting her arse traded and made up for it by throwing the game to let her win.

quote:Every scene kit is becoming more obsessed. Her finally having what it takes to beat Dottie is a massive part of the movie IMO. It's an entirely different and shittier movie without that. A big part of why she came back was a favor to her sister. She owed her one last chance to outshine her. I always liked how the movie threw the "heart of a champion" sports cliche on its side by showing the more flawed secondary character win because they wanted it more.

Too bad she got it gifted.
Dottie was always family first. She didn't even want to play, she did it for Kit.

She absolutely dropped it on purpose. Everyone with a brain knows that.

That depends on if you think the movie is about Kit or Dottie

No shite she didn't drop it on purpose.
She never dropped it at all.
She never fricking touched a baseball.
Bitches don't play baseball, and you guys are suckers for believing that they did.

Exactly. Kit was far more important to her than winning a damn game, at least at the end of the movie. Which is the revelation and the turning point in Dottie's and Kit's lives. Her not having dropped it on purpose would show that Dottie had not grown at all in her understanding of family over competition/war.

Yes she did. Which is a exactly what happens to baseball catchers all the time. And she was one of the best. And she dropped it on purpose.

She droped the ball on purpose and she learned that Karma is a bitch. She wanted a big family but only had one kid. Kit on the other hand had the big family with all the kids and grandkids with her.

EXACTLY.
And Tiger12424 gets it too. There are three big problems with Dottie getting beat:
1) It goes against the hero's journey of Dottie
2) The quote to the grandson at the beginning
3) Penny Marshall herself said that Dottie dropped it on purpose.
I can SEE the arguments, and in a world without those three things they might make more sense. But the movie is about Dottie and making a CHOICE to let go. A Choice. Not getting beat. The important thing is that she consciously said, "It isn't important to me anymore, Building a Family is. And it's more important to my sister. Family first." That's the exact build up to the end.
If Dottie "gets beat" and doesn't drop the ball on purpose, then she effectively gives up because she was beat. She doesn't give up because she made a choice. She sucks and isn't that good anymore. Oh well. Movie over. That's no story.

Just put in the DVD, yep, she confirms in the commentary Dottie dropped it on purpose. Dottie never let anyone know though, she let Kit have her day.
