Please, no spoilers as I have just started the book. Freddy told Nas that the 2 most checked out books in prison were The Art of War "for obvious reasons" and The Other Side of Midnight "for obvious reasons."

Intrigued, I go to the library and check out TOSoM. Much to my surprise, not only is the book narrated by a woman set in 1920s London, but it was first published only last year. Seems to not have been around long enough to become so popular with the inmates.

Please, without spoiling the book, can you confirm 1) that I didn't frick up the title and am reading the wrong book and 2) that it's popularity with the prison population is perfectly(alliteration!!) understandable?

I haven't caught up in the show thread, so perhaps it's discussed in there. If so, my apologies.

The Google says it was published in 1973.

quote:

The Other Side of Midnight is a novel by American writer Sidney Sheldon published in 1973. The book reached No.1 on the New York Times Best Seller list. It was made into a 1977 motion picture of the same name, directed by Charles Jarrott.

Well, frick me running. The one reading is by Canadian author Simone St. James. Decent mystery so far and the synopsis seems better than the other one. But I wonder what it was about that that attracted inmates to it? Seems very soap-operaish

I went to wiki after that episode and read about it. I had never heard of it before but after only the wiki it felt like a holy shite book.

It's a romance book. I think the idea is that the art of war is popular because it teaches strategic techniques that can be used to survive and the romance novel gives a substitute for the intimacy and love that they will be missing in prison.

Eta: I just read some of the synopsis on wiki. I think my assumption may have been wrong.

from reading the synopsis I'm going to guess it has some explicit sexual descriptions.
