ABC renewed dependable sitcom The Middle for a ninth season on Wednesday.
The family comedy, which stars Patricia Heaton and Neil Flynn as middle-class Midwesterners raising three kids, is the second longest-running sitcom on ABC, having premiered one week after Modern Family in 2009.
"The Middle has been one of the network's most consistent performers and helped us to launch a whole new night of comedy when it moved to Tuesdays this season," ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said in a statement. "The Indiana Hecks have found America's sweet spot with their authentic, acerbic and always loving take on parenting, work, kids, marriage and life."

can't believe how little love this show normally gets when it's far superior to Modern Family

Slow your roll, chief. We both know that that's not true, no matter how much you'd like to think it is.

It's legit a great show.

I was worried I was going to find the words "and final" season when I saw they picked it up.

But yeah this show came in in the same year as Modern Family and is arguably much better than Modern Family.

I would not have agreed with this five years ago, but I do today. Modern Family is a caricature of what it used to be. The Middle has not followed that path.

The Middle is funny but unspectacular. It's rarely bad but it's also rarely great. Modern Family has it's share of misses but it also has way more high points than The Middle. I like the Middle but I think it's almost a full star/grade/point below Modern Family.

So you say it lives up to it's name?

Precisely. Let's not even use the Emmy haul as the metric. The writes on MF have memories like elephants. They're not afraid to reach back 5-6 seasons from some of the most clever jokes I've seen in a long time. Jay's birthday video that the Dunphy kids made for him. Gloria rifling through the junk drawer, looking for her keys. Barkley. All the shite Stella stole from Jay and buried in the back yard. Phil's college roomie Ling and his homemade helicopter.

The Step.

I have only seen a few episodes of The Middle, but I have seen enough to know that saying it's better than Modern Family is ridiculous.

I agree with the person who said that Modern Family is basically just a parody of itself at this point. I know they lost some good writers to other shows in the middle of these eight seasons, and that's when I think quality dipped. With the exception of a home run episode here or there, it's no longer that clever show it was in the first three seasons. I hate the characters at this point. Like if they were in any of those post apocalyptic shows on cable, I would be rooting for all of them to be killed off

I've never seen an episode of this show, but it looks like it is a direct rip-off of Malcolm in the Middle.

MF wears on me a bit. They seem to throw as much outlandish things at an episode that they can. The Middle is just consistent and quirky. I've watched both shows since the beginning. Seems like The Middle went through a lull and it has gotten a bit better this season and maybe last. We have to get Brick to college too!

I like the middle because Mìke is not the typical sitcom beta.

Also, Sue in real life

I've been thinking for 4 years that "this has to be the last season," what with the kids getting so old.

But they have kept it pretty fresh. Remarkable for such a long running show with just 5 characters to work with.

Patricia Heaton must have a shitpile of $$$$ from Raymond (nine seasons), The Middle (9 more), and Back To You (1).

Google says: "Patrica Heaton has an estimated net worth of $40 million. Her salary for starring in 'Everybody Loves Raymond' (1996-2005) was $6,000,000 per year. In 9 years, she earned $54,000,000. For TV series 'The Middle' she got $225,000 per episode (she starred in 121 episodes)."

I'd marry her. No prenup.

Sue Heck got some big ole boobies

ETA: I prefer this show to MF even though I quit watching both. 9 seasons is a lot to hold my focus.

The best episodes were the ones that had sue and brick screwing something up. The one when the ripped the drywall out in her bedroom had me rolling.

Sue is just hilarious. Reverend Tim Tom episodes were awesome too.

100% agree. The Middle and Last Man Standing are the two best family sitcoms on TV right now. Although the little midget kid scares the shite out of me for some reason.
