I just started watching it on Netflix. Really solid show!
Usually Syfy shows are restricted by budgetary issues but this show is very well put together.
Season 2 is out now on Syfy and I really hope it catches on.

I just started this. It's pretty good so far, but the main guy is the whiniest little bitch I have ever seen.

The show would be a lot better if the focus was the gay guy and the hot bitchy girl, not emo mope boy and the dull blonde.

My best synopsis from having watched the first 5 episodes is it's Harry Potter in college. But the main guy is more of a Ron than a Harry. It starts with him getting into this magic college and going through his first year. Other big characters are his immediate classmates and some older ones. Also explores people that can't get in to the school so the resort to other ways to learn magic. Mysterious bad guy.

I would recommend reading the book trilogy first. Have not seen the show yet, but the book is great. The author used to be an editor for the New York Times. In the middle of book 2, which I guess is soon to be season 2. Will probably start the series when done with book 2.
What sold me into buying the trilogy...
“The Magicians is to Harry Potter as a shot of Irish whiskey is to a glass of weak tea. Solidly rooted in the traditions of both fantasy and mainstream literary fiction, the novel tips its hat to Oz and Narnia as well to Harry, but don’t mistake this for a children's book. Grossman’s sensibilities are thoroughly adult, his narrative dark and dangerous and full of twists. Hogwarts was never like this.”
—George R. R. Martin, bestselling author of A Game of Thrones

So it's like mystical magic, or like real world, "Now You See Me."

The TV show is the books but sexed up to the extreme, more cursing, crappier plots...and the show makes Quentin such a mopey pussy.
I still kind of enjoyed it.

Rehashing this thread. Anyone else watching this show? It has the whinniest most irredeemable main
characters you have ever seen in one tv series. Only characters that are likable are the hedge witches. Yet i cant wait to watch the next episode. I keep hoping they George Martin the main witch dude and the attempt at being a tough guy roommate who is a bigger whiner than the main guy and always got a fricking wool knit cap on.

I really enjoyed the books.
I did not enjoy the TV show because they seemed to make it like a teenage soap opera, whereas the books felt almost high brow at times. That being said, it seems the series as found its own identity and fan base separate from the books, so good on it.

Who ever thought so many seasons called Magicians when most of the stars don't have magi is a dumbass, the best part of S3 was the strip tease, season 4 sucks so far.
