It's dated now. At the time, however, it was pretty interesting.

Was it too cerebral for the overly-stimulated ADD/Text-Messaging while driving, eating, in class, attending church,etc..generation?

It was your parents generation, thus they broke through those now somewhat outdated ways and days of that time.

It would be like you possibly asking what's the big deal about The Kinks, Television, The Clash, etc..

Without truly knowing and living in that time(the norms and mores of the day..the pop art was that was made), you are missing much of the crux of the story.

True basic stories just don't translate as well to the CGI Generation of movie kids..most would be tortured to watch Turner Classic Movies..no wonder AMC sold out and now shows basic garbage hyped as classic primarily.

DAYUM!

Hmmm, it was made for my generation, and I enjoyed it (in spite of Hoffman's grating self-conscious performance). The problem is that what was groundbreaking then can be mundane now. Think I would give the guy a break.

this post just shows how much of a douche you are. the only legitimate point you made is that i wouldn't understand without living in the time. fine. everything else you wrote just makes you sound like an "i hate kids for no reason" loser.

i watched it, i liked it, i didn't really understand what happened outside of the obvious... he was banging the mom and fell in love with the daughter.

No, your reaction to my post makes you 18. It is a coming of age film, one with anger(not unlike yours of present)..

Your post is fine, and there is no federal crime in asking what is the big deal about The Graduate, given your age in contrast to those coming of age in the late 1960s.

P.S. Douche is so overplayed..and gay(not te ghey).

im not angry. your post just simply seemed to call out this generation without any prompt whatsoever. it was unwarranted on a simple statement.

simply saying the movie is dated or saying you had to live in the times to fully understand its importance and themes (which you did say in the middle of your rant) would have made much more sense.

Not at all, but I question why so much of today's cinema lacks originality, sophistication, romance, and intrigue, etc..

The Graduate's ending was ahead of it's time per movie making of the day, the uncertainty of it all, was groundbreaking at the time.

Like a 'All's Quiet..''Citizen Kane''Best Years Of Our Lives''All About Eve'..etc..

Wow talk about off base.

I first saw this movie when I was 18/19 and I enjoyed it.

I wasn't making a blanket statement of all young folks, but when someone young asks what the big deal is, of such a classic, I have to think some of it must be "lost in translation" given it's date?

A lot of it, but not all of it.

There are many people who think it doesn't hold up (me, for example). In fact, some think it's overrated (I wouldn't go that far, given the date of its release)

.

Actually, I'm not sure I would put "The Graduate" in this league, but to each his own.

Chick in it is hot. The young one, that is.

He didn't stop the wedding. She married the other guy but still ran away with Hoffman. Lotta people miss that.

When the movie first came out, I had an aunt who went to it thinking it was going to be a story about school kids graduating. Boy was she surprised! She walked out of the movie.
