I was told I was crazy for speculating whether he was. Apparently I wasn't even remotely close to the only one.

The director explained that actually showing the death would have felt “gratuitous.”

I noticed you and I get along great everywhere else except in Game of Thrones threads.

Anyone with eyes and a brain would've known that

But but but he said a couple of words! And Brienne was going to completely 180 on her mission to kill Stannis because of it! And she was going to drag a cripple and dying Stannis to Winterfell to get Sansa who isn't in winter fell!

Just like anyone with eyes and a brain know Jon Snow is dead for good and that Melisandre doesn't know how to bring people back from the dead.

ETA: Oh and Catelyn Stark is dead. No way she ever comes back. No possible way at all. We actually saw her get killed.

I think he's dead too, but this wouldn't be the first time that directors/creators have lied purposefully to keep everything a "mystery"

So who knows if he's actually telling the truth

Toldja.

Did you people really need to see his head split in half?

Abso-fricking-lutely. If anyone deserves a brutal on-screen death besides Joffrey and Ramsay, it's clearly Stannis. So long as D&D or GRRM don't say it, he's alive as far as I'm concerned.

Given the gratuity of the series itself, and some of the awful things that have happened to other main characters on screen during the season, the bigger question is 'why not'?

Thank you for providing ground to my theory.

Maybe they did it that way just to mess with your heads. Anyway, heads splitting in half costs money, and they already spent a lot on other things.

For the millionth time, Stannis sees that he's bleeding out from his femoral artery. He's done. Brienne is not a surgeon and actually quickens what was going to happen anyway.

While I think he's dead, what are they supposed to say?

"Ummmmm, welllllll, hmmmmm.............

MAYBE????"

They really don't have a choice other than to tell us he's dead. Whether he is or not.
