I am on episode 3, I feel the series is missing something and not intriguing enough?

Anyone else watching this show on HBO?

I don't like the twin thing. It's distracting.

I'm enjoying it, but it does seem to be developing a bit slow.

Yes. I think "slow development" is a thing at HBO, now. Similar to Westworld (which is excellent, BTW), this whole first season of The Deuce appears to be building this world, more or less, from the ground up. Maybe there will be some fireworks after mid-season, but I don't expect much other than infrastructure building for several more episodes.

I know what it’s missing.... fear. There’s nothing bad happening to the main characters. There’s no sense of fear when I’m watching. I feel like I have nothing to worry about with the characters... does that make sense?

A mix of stories all taking place in NYC 1971, pimps, hos, early porn, sprinkled in little mafia, bars, tons of smoking cigarettes, little bit of union jobs, not much crazy violence yet..

It is definitely building and developing characters.

Yeah, it is. Vinyl was backed by heavyweights, too, particularly Marty, but I think it was little too odd (the supernatural storyline just didn't quite fit the setting or the genre, know what I mean?) - although I found the acting pretty compelling in Vinyl.

However, with Simon's proven history with them and The Wire - I can't imagine this doesn't get at least 2 seasons. It does look pretty expensive, though, relatively speaking. Not "Rome" or "GoT" expensive, but at least "Vinyl" expensive, with the period pieces and size of the cast.

I quit after the second episode. Hated all the characters plus none of the prostitutes were fun to look at

I think James Franco's character is pretty good so far... and the black cop. He's a good character also.

It's crazy how I've become accustomed to people NOT smoking on TV. This show is full of cigarettes.

I agree it's missing something. Not a bad show at all, but I never feel like I just have to watch the next episode ASAP. I think it's missing drama and suspense. Also maybe too much focus on the whores.

I agree with this as well. It was done really well in Legend though when Tom Hardy played the gangster brothers.

The show is awesome so far, in my opinion. Franco is killing it doing both characters, Maggie is also fantastic. The dialogue is fun and the character development is exactly what you’d expect with Simon.
