The Descent...Really? (spoilers)

After seeing so many people pick this movie as one of their top scariest, I decided to give it a go.
I thought it was good, but not great. At all.
It had a few of those scenes that make you jump, but only because it is super quiet and then something bursts on the screen with a lot of noise.
The cave dwellers weren't very scary. And got their asses kicked by a few ladies on a few occasions. And, if they had been in the caves long enough to evolve into sightless creatures, why wasn't their sense of smell elevated. In that one scene, the creature was inches from two women and didn;t know they were there? Could its super hearing not detect their breathing?
And as well prepared as the leader was, she dragged her unknowing friends into a cave that had never been explored before? How had that cave, which was a huge hole right by a major vehicle trail, never been explored before?
I just don't see it as a top 5 scary movie. It was more like a much better The Hills Have Eyes.

I mean I may have missed it, but I don't remember a thread about 'The Descent' being amazing or anything.
I feel like it's just a huge rip off of that Creepypasta about the guy going into that cave.

Scariest part to me was before the weird goblins.
When chick got stuck. Real talk, I sympathy-hyperventilated.

I have the exact same feelings on the movie. I watched it two nights ago based off the recommendations of this board and it was nothing special in my eyes. The worst part was when the girl almost got stuck in the hole.

similar to The Witch, the lack of jump scares are going to cause many people to call it not really scary.
The atmosphere, setting, and feelings of helplessness are what cause the "fearful tension" that those of us that love the movie feel.
Being stuck in a cave formation that no one has discovered, not knowing if you'll survive let alone stave off some humanoid creatures, and dealing with the pain of losing your husband and child....I mean that's some pretty horrific stuff.

I saw it in the theater and thought it was terrible.

This pretty much sums up my feelings for it. I appreciated it for it's ability to "set the mood". I felt like I was in the cave with the main character for the entire movie.

The monsters don't exist.
The Descent is scary because these women are lost under the earth and have literally no way to go out, and have to keep going forward, even though that leads to almost certain death. It's not about jump scares, though it does have a few great ones (the monster lurking in the back of the frame), but it's a terrifying movie for how it sets mood and we watch competent, capable characters make smart choices, but are still undone by one person's narcissism.
When the woman is "reborn" in the pool of blood, that is her mind letting go and her having a psychotic break, as she imagines herself becoming a hero and fighting her way to freedom, when really she is sitting in the darkness slowly either freezing or starving to death.
The Descent is f'n great. It's genuinely terrifying before a single monster shows up in the frame.

All I know is I saw this movie when I was living alone and I swore those monsters were hanging out on my ceiling. Scared the beeejezus out of me.
I'm a pansy though.

They are still there...watching and waiting.

All of those things.
I love that movie. It's legit scary, and the monsters have very little to do with that.

Same here.
This was half of a potentially good movie. It turned into utter shite once the abbies appeared. They should have stuck to exploring the very real tension arising from finding yourself in over your head, stuck beneath the Earth with possibly no way out, instead of turning it into a juvenile monster flick replete with telegraphed jump scares, but that would have required far more writing talent than they apparently had available.
5/10 first half, 0/10 second half, 1/10 overall. There's no reason to see this movie. We were talking about Michael Biehn the other day. K2 was much better than this shite; in particular, Taylor and H faced the mountain but never found themselves fighting abominable snowmen, and it also had elements of a reckless leader getting his companion in trouble. If you want to watch people get picked off by monsters in claustrophobic spaces, watch Aliens, which also has elements of a woman reconnecting and getting her mojo back.
As for the comment "the monsters don't exist," FFS. Let me repeat that. FFS.
As for the comparison to "The Witch", I gave that movie a 7/10 FWIW. Much, much better movie.
As for "The Descent",
