The 11 Biggest Oscar Shockers of All-Time

11. Marisa Tomei of My Cousin Vinny upsets Vanessa Redgrave for Howard's End for Best Supporting Actress at the 1993 ceremony.
10. Bob Fosse, director of Cabaret, beats out Francis Ford Coppola, director of The Godfather, in the Best Director category at the 1973 ceremony.
9. Rocky wins Best Picture over heavy favorite Network at the 1977 ceremony.
8. At the 2007 ceremony, the rap group Three 6 Mafia scores an Oscar in the Best Original Song category for their song: "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp" (from the movie Hustle & Flow), beating out the heavily favored Dolly Parton song, "Travellin' Thru" from the movie Transamerica.
7. At the 2006 ceremony, Crash scored an upset for the ages - beating out the heavily-favored Brokeback Mountain in the Best Picture category.

Sin City or Lord Of War or just give the Oscar to Pulp Fiction because it should have won years ago.

That's really not that shocking when you look at the context. The Deer Hunter had just won Best Picture the year before and Oscar voters were probably hesitant to award another Vietnam War film their top prize so soon afterward. Also...Kramer vs. Kramer absolutely cleaned up that night. Not including Best Picture, it won Oscars for Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
I would have given Francis Ford Coppola a Best Director award as a consolation prize at the very least, however. He literally went through hell making Apocalypse Now and it's a testament to his skill and craftsmanship that the movie turned out as well as it did.

my favorite not listed was Avatar and James Cameron losing to the EOD movie by his ex wife that i can't even remember the name of.

Didn't she direct Zero Dark 30 as well? Both are rather overrated IMHO.

By Oscar night Zero Dark Thirty didn't have a shot sadly. Kathryn Bigelow had herself been snubbed out of a Best Director nomination - which is just about a death sentence if you want your film to win Best Picture (though Affleck turned that norm on its head that night). Most people thought it was either going to be Argo or Lincoln that won the big prize that night.

I've seen it about 4 times bc a family member loves it...An old family member.
There's nothing really good or unique or interesting about it...Compared to rebolutionary Citizen Kane.
Valley feels and looks like how Hollywood filmed movies originally coming from stage plays. Fixed tripod shots from afar, all characters jammed into a tiny room so they all fit into the frame, yapping away incessantly very loudly just like a stage play.
I use that movie as an example of how far we've come. GWTW doesn't feel that dated nor of course Citizen Kane.
Valley looks and sounds like it could have been Rudolph Valentino's last picture.
