George Takei isn't happy about it

Whatever your thoughts on the matter, reading the comments reminded me that Sulu actually has a daughter in the original continuity. It makes me wonder if the filmmakers even knew that. If they did, it makes me think they didn't give a frick. Sure a gay man can be involved in a heterosexual relationship (there are plenty of real world examples), but that certainly complicates the character's backstory unnecessarily.

I also agree with Takei's point. Roddenberry never intended the character of Hikaru Sulu to be gay. Now a whole generation of fans will likely watch episodes of the original series thinking Sulu was always a closet homosexual man. I realize it's an alternate timeline, but the people in charge of these new films love shitting all over Star Trek fans.

He gets like 6 lines a movie and 3 lines an episode of the original series, does it matter?

Well Sulu is straight and has a kid. This has been established since the 60's

It matters to George Takei

/shrug

Then again, fandom has certainly overstated the role of the majority of the original cast. Sulu, Chekov, and Uhura did frick all in the original series. I do think Nichelle Nichols' roll was pretty groundbreaking for the 1960s though.

But it's not a remake.

Why constantly shove the gay stuff down the public's throat? Iron man is a black woman, sulu is a gay Asian. Why do these Hollywood people insist on making these statements? Give it a rest.

How will this even come up in the movie? Is he gonna make out with a male alien?

its supposed to simply be matter of fact a scene where he is w/his kid and husband.

not really sure that qualifies as a shoved down out throats thing.

As an actor that would sort be depressing that they changed your character for all history.

Taikei might be gay but he's not playing Taikei...he's playing a damn character - that he worked years cultivating because...but now, well 2016.

Rock Hudson was gay...should we re-cut Giant to make sure he doesn't touch Elizabeth Taylor and instead goes after James Dean?

All these old storylines, regardless of changes - politics, social, money - are being re-written now for agendas and not art.

There's no artistic explanation to make Sulu suddenly gay in the Star Trek universe. Artistically it contradicts. There's no logical storyline other than, lets make him gay. And it doesn't work with his history.

they don't.

they just want to repackage star trek as a pure action franchise.

You seem to be taking it a little personally. They're apparently going to have a character who's gay. Why the frick does that bother you? Unless you're opening your mouth to receive something you'd probably object to anyway, I can't see how it's being shoved down your throat. Is there any theoretical world where you wouldn't consider having a gay character as having "gay stuff" shoved down your throat? You might as well say that heterosexuality is being shoved down your throat because -- and I won't assume you've noticed this -- dudes and babes have been kissin' and frickin' and makin' Betty Grable eyes at each other on-screen for more than a century. If two dudes or two babes kiss each other on-screen, it takes very little in the way of inner gumption for you to survive the still fairly-rare experience.

I doubt they'll show that kind of act (him shoving it down his husbands throat) It'd cause the movie to be rated nc17 or xxx and it probably wouldn't be allowed in 99% of theaters worldwide...

The fact that Takei (an openly and activist gay man) thinks this is a terrible idea is all you need to know.

George Takei Reacts to Gay Sulu News: "I Think It's Really Unfortunate"

Except Takei wasn't overjoyed. He had never asked for Sulu to be gay. In fact, he'd much prefer that he stay straight. "I’m delighted that there’s a gay character," he tells The Hollywood Reporter. "Unfortunately, it’s a twisting of Gene’s creation, to which he put in so much thought. I think it’s really unfortunate."

Takei explains that Roddenberry was exhaustive in conceiving his Star Trek characters. (The name Sulu, for example, was based on the Sulu Sea off the coast of the Philippines, so as to render his Asian nationality indeterminate.) And Roddenberry had always envisioned Sulu as heterosexual.

If they wanted a gay character, they should have just made one. I don't really like changing a character that has been around for 50 years like that.
