Akira will one day be filmed as a live action movie, but we're told it will require a $300 million budget which means that itll be a few more years before we see this project happen unless someone like James Cameron takes it on (would be a very James Cameron movie, fwiw).

I believe it could be filmed on a MUCH CHEAPER budget and still remain faithful to the story, but apparently Hollywood disagrees.

What other stories would you like to see filmed as live action movies which, at the moment, are too complex to be filmed with modern budgets?

It's an anime.

No offense but I just don't get anime at all. I Kindaliked Gundam Wing and a dragon Ball Z buteverything else has always had some interesting ideas and concepts paired with the worst characters ever.

I watched Akira like 15 years ago, but I don't remember anything about it. I watched Ghost in the Shell about 3-4 months ago and thought it was awful.

Halo
They've had talks but it needs a big budget too.

If ever done right...I can't even imagine how huge of a hit a live action film of akira would be on the Asian market.

I've always imagined a live action Halo as a cross between Starship Troopers and Aliens, stylisticly at least. A mostly practical effects movie like those would be relatively cheap.

I'm not sure complexity is the defining factor in big budget movies rather the setting such as epic movies/shows like Ben Hur, Game of Thrones, etc.; any story that requires a lot of extras and a unique setting. A movie drama might have an extremely complex plot but might not require a big budget in terms of the number of actors/extras, scenery, special effects, etc.

fwiw, Akira isn't your typical "nerd" story. It's regarded as a classic animation in all aspects and sits at the very top of animated classic films. It's brutal and visionary.

I understand not everyone has seen Akira, but to have never even heard of Akira is embarrassing.
