Spin-off thrd: Your favorite video game ruined by Hollywood?-

There have been a few game-flicks that were pretty impressive, (Resident Evil comes to mind) but others have been pure no-effort crap.
An insult to a great game.
A true celluloid turd.
As a proud genXer, I was around to see some of the bigger leaps video game systems have made over time, from Atari 2600 to Tecmo Bowl, from PC epics to PS1 and so forth. Some leaps had less to do with the advantages offered by a new console and more to do with pushing the limits of old parameters. One of them happened in 1990, and it was truly amazing to have been there and seen and experienced just how big a leap it really was.
Origin software released a DOS-based PC space-combat sim that would come to define a genre. It was so far ahead, it took the mighty Lucasarts 3 years to release the first build of X-Wing and another year for Tie Fighter, both based on a very, very similar engine.
I was apprehensive but hopeful when 9 years later, I learned Hollywood had decided to pay tribute to it, what had become one of my favorite games of all time...then I saw the movie poster:
...and threw up in my mouth a little.
I'll never forgive Hollywood for what they did to Chris Roberts's revolutionary vision...Freddie Putz Jr. And that other Goob as Maniac?
Turrible.
shite, WC III was more movie than game and I'll be honest, both sucked pretty hard, but it had Mark Hamill as Blair, Biff himself as Maniac
plus a still-hot Ginger Lynn, Malcolm MacDowell, John Rhys-Davies...
I'm sure y'all have others that may be worse, but this one really chapped my arse...still does.

Tough call between Super Mario Bros and Street Fighter. Both great games and terrible movies. Mario may be worse just because they changed so much.

Still waiting on the Halo movie

Super Mario had the budget to be a better movie - they have no excuse there. It seemed like a script with an identity crisis to me (didn't know if it wanted to be a pure kiddie movie or a kid movie with grown-up references geared toward Donkey Kong players) and could not be salvaged in the editing.
At all.
At all.

I think the director gave up on that to do District 9. A Halo movie could work if they chose the right story line.

I hope they do a better job with Halo than Doom.
Doom was probably my most-favorite game for the PS1. I mean, an astronaut soldier with a Big fricking Gun (literally) fighting through bloody, gory levels of Alien Hell...what more could then college-student-me ask for in a game? Karl Urban was a good call as the main character, and the tech was there to make it a badassed flick...
it just...was flat. I dunno, I only sat through it once.
The game I'd like to make into a big-budget high $ movie: Twisted Metal.
I've only played TM1 thru TM Black, but those games were a serious kick in the arse, and a movie with today's effects could be something with it's dark, gritty mood and seriously deranged main characters. I guess the timing isn't great- right now it may come off like a Death Race meets F&F rip-off, but with a decent storyline/ an actual PLOT, who knows? I just have no idea who I would cast as Sweet-Tooth...

Doom was tailor made for a move adaptation, and that one blew.
Street Fighter could have been much better as well.
Mario is like impossibly to do outside of Animation. And it's so far removed from the video game that it has no effect on the VG.

Final Fantasy wasn't that bad, but man did I have big expectations.

Well they removed the entire plot related to hell, so there's that.
I mean, you could do a shot for shot movie version of Doom 3 and it would be incredible. It's literally crazy that they screwed it up.

Gotta love that they decided to have twins that aren't even the same race for Double Dragon.
The main problem with VG movies is the writers tend to stray so far from the source that there is very little connection to the game other than some names and basic plot lines.
I know that games often have ridiculous stories but just like with book adaptations I feel that it's idiotic to take an existing IP and change it so much that the built in audience will tune out on it.
Even the VG movies that weren't completely horrible tend to stray far enough that it's hard to have much attachment to them as a fan of the games. The first Resident Evil are Mortal Kombat are the ones that come the closest to sticking with the actual stories but even then you can tell that whoever wrote them never played the games and didn't take the scripts very seriously.

We used to get escorted out of The Caterie after school everyday for playing Double Dragon upstairs without being 18.
True story. Damn I spent some quarters on that game.

Super Mario Bros is the only correct answer.

They need to make a resident evil movie based off of re4. Its tailor made to be a fantastic movie. Creepy exploration in awesomely scary environments with set pieces of action against some of the best villains in video game history.
Instead they start at the original and briefly work thru nemesis but that's it. Not much else from the video games was used.

Doom was another one where they picked the wrong game. They made it like doom 3 was. A creepy corridor shooter that was dark and slower moving. Should have gone with more of a more fast paced action movie with horror elements. The first person scene was cool tho.

That and the fact that the three main protagonists of the Resident Evil Series (Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield, and Leon Kennedy) are almost never seen in the films.

I don't know if I can answer the question in the OP, but I'll say the only VG movies that rewatchable to me are Prince of Persia, Doom, and Hitman.
None are "good" but I can watch them when they're on.

Super Mario Brothers has some of the most WTF creative decisions I've ever seen in a movie.
It's completely unrecognizable from the game.
I mean, even the tone and aesthetics of the movie are way too dark compared to the bright and colorful Mario games.
Doom is another good one.
The whole point of Doom is that you're fighting demons from Hell.
Why change that to mutants in space?
I don't get it.
