Some thoughts about the Kingsguard in GOT

Are they worthless?
Since the show started 2 kings have been murdered.
Just prior to the show one of them killed the king while sitting on the throne.
The best of them were chilling at the Tower of Joy during the rebellion.
Are they doing much of anything really?

Well I mean, Aerys deserved what Jaime gave him. They've been worthless since Joffrey fired Ser Barristan though.

Currently, absolutely. The only one worth a damn was Sir Barristan, and that's really it. Aerys Kingsguard was highly formidable and competent, but Robert only really had Barristan and Jaime, the later of which was treacherous as hell.

Depends on their purpose and the time we're discussing. Pretty much anyone since a faux Baratheon has been on the throne has been minions of Ceresi Lannister who certainly aren't there for their ability to protect.
As far as the Tower of Joy, they were placed there by Rhaegar and the strong suspicion is they were technically doing their jobs.
ETA: And we know now that Jaime did what he did to protect the realm. I'd say he did his job in protecting the throne, even if it meant doing in a King.

Kind of tough for the Kingsguard to protect the King when it is people who are high up on the totem pole getting them. Robert got schemed and killed by the queen and Joffrey got poisoned by the queen of thorns in a scheme that was almost impossible to stop. It also didn't help that Joffrey pretty much pissed every high ranking person off. The Kingsguard screwed Ned over pretty good and easily thwarted that attempt to get Joffrey off the throne.

The inner circles did these kings in. I've always looked at the guard as only useful against a direct attack.

Spoilers
The Kingsguard has clearly deteriorated post-Aerys but really goes to shite after Robert Baratheon dies because all the ones that are killed/ banished/ leave are replaced by Cersei's' sycophants

I would have thought they would have carved up the faith militant, especially after they took Margery. Tommen has super restraint to not order them to attack. I'm still blown away the Tyrells haven't attacked the city yet. Maybe that is coming, but I just can't believe they would gamble and keep holding Loras and Margery..

It's basically Martin's version of the Roman praetorian guard. Highly corrupt

I thought Robert was killed by a hog. Don't recall foul play there. Am I missing something?
Joffrey was killed by poison. He should've had a food taster but not sure his armed bodyguards are to blame.

Cersi made her cousin Lancel get Robert drunk so he wouldn't be at his best while hunting.

Well I can't blame the guard on that either. King is a grown man and should know how to drink and should know not to hunt while drunk. Unless it's the guards duty to stop the king from hunting after drinking which I doubt they could do.

I thought the gay dude was poisoning Robert's wine?

The king is worthless at this point. If you cant free your wife/mom from prison im sorry you're worthless.

He did. Lancel discusses it with Cersei who was also in on it.

He's a young kid and still very unsure of himself.
