So the movie version of Phantom of the Opera was set in Paris in 1870

just one problem. The Germans were in Paris in 1870.

Female lead wasn't bad, the male, ugh.

Well, the original publication was in 1909, and was billed as a true story. Since the book itself begins after Erik's death some years after the events of the Opera house. We can assume that many years have passed. 1870 seems a reasonable time frame.

I'm one of the biggest Phantom fans out there. I listen to the entire musical several times a year and know almost all of the songs by heart.

That being said, the movie was such a letdown. Singing was subpar, plot changes were weak, and it just didn't have the magical feel of the musical

Emmy Rossum was a good Christine, Patrick Wilson was a good Raul, the film failed because Gerard Butler was a horrible Phantom.

I agree on Wilson, but I didn't like Rossum as Christine. Personal preference though

If I am Andrew Lloyd Webber I am looking at the success of Les Miserables and realizing that going with Joel Schumacher as a director was a bad idea. I'd push through a remake using a similar formula Tom Hooper used on Les Miserables: bigger-named cast, live singing, etc.

ETA: Also...hire a better make-up artist. The "disfigured" face of the Phantom was hardly worth getting scared over.
