Same reason why most mainstream music is horrible too and filled with the Justin Biebers of the world.

On this, I agree 100%.

You'd be better off posting in some other movie forum.

Oh.. you responded to me, so I got confused (which is a normal state for me, pretty much)... I was like.. "what'd I do? But whatever."

To what...prove my point? How much money do you think Criterion brings in...say, in comparison to the rest of at home movie sales?

Exactly...

It's not that there is no market for higher quality, or specifically in the case of this argument higher brow films...it's that there is simply not a large enough audience to dedicate more time or money to it than studios already do. If the market was there, there would be no need for this discussion because the studios, liking to make money like they do, would already be mining that territory.

In this case, it's not so much the studios' faults as it is the consumers'.

I'm essentially a year behind on movies because I have a two year old, but can't a guy watch both?

I mean, I enjoyed both Iron Man 3 as well as Upstream Color and The Past. I watched both Pacific Rim and Fruitvale Station. It's not like the existence of one prevents the other.

And small art films have always only come to the big cities. It's not like the suburbs and small towns were getting the Kiss of the Spider Woman back in the 80s. If you want to see art films in the theater, move to a big city. If not, get it on DVD or stream it on Netflix. Movies are more available than they have ever been in the entire history of film.

Hollywood keeps churning out all of these boring and bland movies every year and of course the public eats it up.

FIFY

I'd say up to 70% of films in movies released in theaters are boring TO ME.

I would assume the same percentage for you.

For you, that percentage includes Superhero Movies. For me it doesn't.

It's called taste, and we all have different types.

But for the serious film lovers like myself out there, we hate these movies and what they stand for. Lets get some originality back on the big screen!

First, if you hate a genre of film just based on origin of media, that's kind of lame and tells me you don't like film.

Second, comic book themselves are one of the most original mediums to exist. From Superman to GotG from X-Men and Swamp Thing to Blankets, 100 Bullets, Sin City and Y the Last Man, even Maus. That isn't a fair assessment.

It really sucks when every theater in my state has the same boring action movies but its so difficult to find a theater showing intelligent films like Only Lovers Left Alive and Under the Skin.

I will agree with this. If you don't live a major metro area (NY, LA, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas) It can sometimes be impossible to catch an indie film.

But that's been the case for decades. This did not come about because of superhero movies.

Although I don't have the balls to start a thread about it (kudos to you), I completely agree.

I enjoy some of the superhero movies, but now they are just going over board. shite like Antman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern 2 (after the first one was miserable), Batman vs fricking Superman (I mean come on), etc...

shite needs to stop.

Green Lantern 2 was awesome. Sofia Vergara's nude scene as Star Sapphire was top notch!

I agree, need super villain movies. Show their origins in detail.

Not a fan of the super hero movie genre, but I definitely enjoyed Nolan's take on them! Didn't even think I would.

I agree that it is an absurd amount of super hero movies now.. it's either that or some sort of sequel/reboot nowadays.. however I don't let any of that bother me. I don't have to watch it.

You mean the same company that put out a four disc set on The Rock (which, BTW, includes an unintentionally hilarious director's commentary from Michael Bay)? The sales on that probably kept the lights on, so good on them, but let's not pretend they don't dumb themselves down. And while I do love Criterion, why do I have to pay $40 for every great old movie? Can't there just be a cheap copy of The Third Man without all the bells and whistles?
