This period in Japanese history is crazy. Anybody know why they are changing the character names? Are they using the historical backdrop but telling a fictional story?

It's based on the book "Shogun" by James Clavell which is a fictionalized version of history. Wiki would probably have details as to how much license was taken.

An historically accurate depiction would cover too much time and would actually be much crazier.

The Origins of the Shogun and the Bushi - YouTube

The Weakening Imperial State | Setting the Stage Episode 2

Chaos in the Capital | Setting The Stage Episode 3

I'll let you find the rest but you get the idea from these videos. A very long and complex tale that the novel attempts to fictionalize without covering generations like the real story does.

And it was the original series. Which makes me ask, how dare HULU advertise this reworking as an "original series"?

Anyone seen the show yet? I just watched the first two episodes and I like it a lot so far.

You would totally think that an 80's miniseries wouldn't hold up.

It totally holds up...maybe not in effects.

But it's totally engrossing. I have a fear this will be sanitized. Japan's viewpoint at the time was akin to uncontacted peoples today.

So when we hear English on the show, it’s either “Dutch” if he’s talking to his crew, and “Portuguese” when he’s speaking to the Japanese or missionaries, right?

How dare they want to clarify that it's not an adaptation of, or a sequel to, a previous series but an original adaptation of a novel?

Are you okay? This is a safe space. You'll be alright here.

John Blackthorne is an English pilot serving on a Dutch ship.

At least in the novel.
