I finally got around to finishing the series last night. It took me a while because I was very disappointed with the very first episode and didn't really want to continue as season three had been so very disappointing.

But then I got to episode two and was blown away by how good it was. That was season two quality stuff right there and the twist at the end blew my freaking mind! (Though I have to admit I thought there was something off about the woman on the bus from the very beginning. I had originally thought she was behind everything in episode one but then filed her away when it turned out she was not.)

And then episode three started. It was going well, everything was awesome, and they were setting up Euros as being the ultimate baddy of baddies in the Sherlock Universe.

....Then they made her into a freaking X-Men villain. She turned the whole hospital into a looney bin by merely talking to everyone? Really? That was the first thing about the episode that bothered me.

But then Moriarty for the save! I was so excited to see him back. I knew he hadn't been really dead. And it turns out he was in cahoots with their sister the whole time?! Awesome!

....No. That's a flashback scene. And then the whole episode fell apart for me. What made it all the worse is that at the end, she was merely misunderstood and all she wanted was for Sherlock to play with her.

My God. Such wasted potential. Now it looks like there will be no season five due to declining ratings and the rising star power of Cumberbatch. Sad. But clearly for the best.

I liked season 4 when I watched it but the more I think back on it, the less I liked the ending.

I actually liked the first episode and how it set up Dr. Watson's development as a character. Sherlock has learned through Dr. Watson how to be a human being, and with Watson going from loving husband to potential cheater to grief-stricken, broken man, it taught Sherlock a lot as well.

But the last episode was a dud. I didn't mind that his sister could talk her victims into being her slaves. That seems possible in the story's universe. If Sherlock is an uber-genius detective, then maybe she can be an uber-genius manipulator.

It was the speed that she could do it that made it seem silly. They should have showed that locking her up for years only allowed her to use her intellect to take over the facility and that this episode was her grandmaster plan for escaping.

And I agree that the ending was pathetic. She shouldn't have been some pity-party little girl who wanted a friend. She should have been just like Sherlock: obsessed with using her ability.

Indeed.

While I was not blown away by season four I have to say I am most impressed with the performance of Sian Brooke as Eurus. She stole every scene she was in, and while her character's arc ended up disappointing, I have to say that she did not. That scene where Sherlock meets her for the "first" time in her cell was incredible. You could literally feel the chemistry between the two actors and I found myself unable to look away from her eyes. They were very captivating.

As a villain, even with her mutant-esque powers, she had Moriarty topped until the final ten minutes or so. The writing turned her into a stereotypical lost soul and that gravely disappointed me.

I thought the last scenes of the final episode were perfect and an excellent conclusion to the series if it never returns.

That final episode was terrible. This is the very definition of jumping the shark. I liked it better w/ a new case/villain every episode. Enough of the superhero villains.

Season 4 was awful, yes. There are a lot of reasons, so I'll just list a few

- making his sister an evil version of Professor X with her mind control ability

- Mary literally moving much faster than a speeding bullet

- the extremely predictable series of events in the finale.

- Sherlock and Mycroft being too incredibly stupid to follow this extremely predictable series of events, then being amazed as they unfold.

Having said that, I highly recommend (in addition to just rewatching the excellent seasons 1-2) Mr. Holmes on amazon prime. That is an excellent Sherlock story and Sir Ian Mckellen definitely makes a fine Sherlock.

Season 4 was weird, but it's hard to top what they had in the first 3 seasons. You can tell they reached a little bit, but it worked for me. I enjoyed the "fantasy" aspects of it, and they stretched it to the max.
