Love this movie, I dk why people say A Bugs Life is like it when the Samuri in Seven Samuri are real warriors and the movie is more about them than the villagers....

Anyway, I know it's 1950's Japanese film but the acting in it is so over the top, anyone else feel like everyone in that movie except the old Samuri and the guy with long hair is extremely manic and/or schizophrenic?

I mean I like the movie but cmon, when anything remotely bad happens they break down into wailing crying and screaming. When something's funny they all die laughing.
Everytime the chick talks it's like someone is holding a gun to her head she's so distraught

Kurosawa's samurai films are quite theatrical; it was a conscious choice. It's the same with his other films; Rashomon, Throne of Blood, The Hidden Fortress and Ran, etc. The leads, and of course Mifune, are wonderful. One of the most beautiful films ever made.

Great movie. Toshiro Mifune is awesome to say the least. Amazing in High and Low, Throne of Blood and Yojimbo. OP reminded me to check Amazon for Ikiru and come to find out, it's available for rent. It wasn't last time I checked. Can't wait to watch it ASAP.

Cinema was more theater back then, you had to emote more...bollywood movies back then are the same - especially with long group shots...kabuki...

Quality of equipment too compared to America
