That movie is horrible to stomach. It takes us all back to the horrific events of 9/11. Just knowing what happens to all of those people, how they all so bravely stepped up and fought back against the terrorist is both inspiring and terrifying. I watched that movie one time and told myself "never again".

Saving Private Ryan...Schindler's List...these were so sad...but nothing moved me like the end of The Empire of the Sun. Christian Bale was amazing. Some of Spielberg's best work. If you can watch that move and not cry at the final scene, you don't have a heart.

I loved mystic river when it first came out, but I tried watching a few months ago and thought it aged horribly. The Kevin bacon wife storyline was so cheesy.
i've always thought that was an overrated movie ...

There's sad endings in movies....
Leslie dies in Bridge to Terabithia...Where the Red Fern Grows, ending to A Field of Dreams, The Champ ending, etc.
But that's different than a sad movie...those movies by and large aren't sad until the end...in fact most of those are heartwarming.
So, the Elephant Man is up there...Terms of Endearment, is up there...Debra Winger gets stuck with a loser and then gets cancer and her kids hate her. Everything in life falls apart.

Lots of tearjerkers out there. Dogs, death, and various other relatable situations that have brought me to tears. But "UP" gets my vote simply because I didn't see that shite coming. I thought the wife and I were gonna settle in to a feel good animated movie then BAM, right in the fricking feels

Probably Dear Zachary. Not sure if it's possible to not get a little teary eyed watching that one.
Yep. Not even close.

Since Dear Zachary and Schindler's List are clear favorites, I'll just post a few I didn't see listed.
Life Is Beautiful has to be up there for the parents here.

War Horse had its moments. The tangled in barb wire, blind protagonist and old French grandfather at the auction scenes were all pretty tough, but not the saddest movie ever.

Not the saddest, but I felt a lot of anger watching Castaway when Tom Hanks finally made it home to his wife only to find out the slut had moved on and was already f'ing someone else.
Yup, total slut for fricking someone FOUR YEARS after she was told her husband died

Yeah the ending sucks...and wouldn't she be worse for leaving her current husband and kids after Hanks returns?
I mean, even Buttercup moved on. At least she waited 5 years.
Still the Cast Away ending sucks and shouldn't you make an exception for a guy marooned on a desert isle? Especially when she admits, he was the love of her life. So everyone loses.
