At long last, the Gambit movie has found its director. Channing Tatum came onboard the X-Men spinoff last year, and 20th Century Fox quickly staked out an October 7, 2016 release date. But the project has been slow-going when it comes to finding a director, with the clock ticking and October 2016 looming closer. Reports swirled that Tatum reached out to folks like Bennett Miller (Foxcatcher) to take the helm, but EW now reports that Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt has been tapped to steer this particular superhero ship.

Gambit aka Remy LeBeau is a fan-favorite character from the X-Men comics, a New Orleans native with a penchant for gambling and turning objects (like playing cards) into throw-able explosives. Taylor Kitsch filled the role in the 2009 misfire X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but with Gambit Tatum aims to jumpstart a new X-Men franchise as the series proper is currently at a high point; the 80s-set X-Men: Apocalypse currently in production.

Wyatt first gained notice with his 2008 film The Escapist before helming the pleasantly surprising Apes reboot. Last year he turned his attention to crime drama territory in the Mark Wahlberg-fronted remake The Gambler to somewhat ho-hum results, but he’s certainly proved capable of infusing blockbuster material with smarts and humanity, so he seems like a solid fit for Gambit.

A Channing Tatum starring Gambit movie sounds awful.

This.

I never got his popularity in the comics as anything more than a guest character. "Hold on whilst I charge up my poker cards and throw em in yo face, Chere."

Yeah, that does sound like good ole Hollywood formula thinking.

Channing Tatum with a "New Orleans" accent. That sounds awful.

They probably figure that he can do it because he's filmed movies there.

Or, they don't care and he won't be doing an accent. Or, he'll do a really shitty one.

I just can't see Channing Tatum as Gambit. Different body types and vibe, but I also initially disliked Hugh Jackman as Wolverine given his height. Jackman nailed the essence of Wolverine even though he was about a foot taller than the comic version.

I'm not sure Gambit can carry his own movie, but if Ant man can then anything is possible I guess.

Ah. I still think he's too much of a meathead to be Gambit.

While he did not grow up in NOLA, he spent a lot of time here, allegedly. He says that was part of the way he sold himself as Gambit. That he was familiar and could "do the accent".

Well, my brother is definitely going to see it. He's been a huge Gambit fan since HS, long before the first movie came out.

Unless they have a stellar co star or 5, this doesn't really interest me.

That's the best you could do to make Gambit sound like shite?

A Gambit film has a lot of potential. Tatum doesn't fill me with confidence that this film will achieve said potential but that's about casting, not the character.

the last 2 xmen films were pretty good, even the wolverine was solid IMO. Marvel isn't the only studio that can make good comic book films.

Hugh Jackman is retiring after the next Wolverine solo movie. As hot as Tatum is right now, maybe they hope Gambit can be the new Wolverine.
