Growing up in a family owned bar and being around 6 when this movie came out it holds in incredible amount of nostalgia with me. I do feel though that it was such a perennial 80's movie that it wouldn't have been as successful in any other period of time.
Bar culture was so huge back then. People were so invested to their local watering holes that having a movie about a legendary "cooler" at a bar only makes sense.
Found this little blog explaining how much Dalton cleared in pay just working at the DD for 8 days.
