I had just noticed her this weekend in ST3. They gave her a cheesy reaction shot as the Enterprise pulled into port.

Sad to see her go.

She was actually older than Shatner and Nimoy (both born in March 1931) by just under a year, making her the 3rd oldest of the main cast (of Season 1), with both De Kelley and Jimmy Doohan having been born in 1920.

She was also the only main cast member to leave the show during its 3 year run (effectively replaced by Walter Koenig's Chekov to provide a relatively stable presence at the navigator's console on the bridge).

She was a singer, as well, coming up through the variety ranks, opening for the likes of Billie Holliday.

She was in the girl band in Some Like It Hot.

Star Trek effectively ended her career. She struggled with addiction until approximately 1980.

RIP, Yeoman Rand.

From IMDB; this is pretty sad.

quote:

[on her termination from the original Star Trek (1966) series] They wanted William Shatner to have romances in each episode with a different person, because for him to be stuck with one woman was not good for him and it wasn't good for the audience. That's what they told me, so I was written out. There were two blonde girls and one black girl. Nichelle Nichols was a more important character and couldn't be written out. Everything's political in America. One of the blondes have to go. The other one was engaged to the boss, so guess who went? I just about killed myself. I drank, that's what we do, we drink to get rid of pain. I was really mad. My God, was I bitter.
