Great character.

Adam Schiff: Started with a murder, ends with an execution. You got what you wanted. Take the rest of the week off.

Jack McCoy: It's Friday, Adam.

Adam Schiff: So it is. See you on Monday.

He left a hit show (Mission Impossible) because he refused to work on the Sabbath. He told them when they hired him, but they didn't take him seriously. They had to replace him after the first season.

A great actor and a great Jew.

He reminds me of a mentor that I had as a young prosecutor. I looked upon Schiff with the same reverence.

Great man.

Wasn't he the only constant throughout the show?

No, they had at least three DAs, Fred Dalton Thompson and Sam Waterston (as Jack McCoy, of course) playing the other two I remember. I don't think any cast member lasted the entire 20 year series.

There was another scene that's always stuck with me.

quote:

[Schiff finds McCoy in a holding cell with 3 other men]

Schiff: Nice.

McCoy: Adam. [to his cellmates] Mr. Barton, Mr. Jasperson,
Mr. Montoya-- Mr. Schiff.

Schiff: We're in a good mood, aren't we?

McCoy: All except Mr. Jasperson. He was just convicted of murder.

Mr. Jasperson: Yeah, and it was bull. I'm gonna be gettin' outta here soon.

Schiff: Young man, sit down.

With the quickness, Adam disabused Mr. Jasperson of the notion that the courtesy was anything more than a pretense, and that he had any business responding to it.

They had a female DA named Nora Lewin I believe, played by Dianne Wiest. She was liberal and way too soft to be a prosecutor. Not cold blooded enough. Schiff was liberal but still firmly grounded in enforcement of law and order.

I like to think that she lost her election to Arthur Branch.

I'm estimating here without looking it up...

DA Schiff seasons 1-12
DA Lewin seasons 13-14
DA Branch seasons 15-18
DA McCoy seasons 19-20

That was one of my favorite episodes. Hesch from the Sopranos as the lecherous judge.
