The Rocketeer
The Shadow
Doc Savage
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow
The Phantom
Man I wish Hollywood made more movies like these. Do y'all have any recommendations based on the above movies?
I almost want to put Sahara in that list too. I miss good action movies that have unrealistically heroic protagonists with a sense of levity. Everything has to be dark and realistic and all our heroes have to be flawed to the point of being assholes these days.

Edgar Rice Burroughs' characters were first printed in the pulps, so:
Tarzan
John Carter of Mars
At the Earth's Core
Land/People that Time Forgot

I dunno. When I'm watching a movie like Sahara I hate the cheesiness and silliness. Then when I watch a serious grim movie like Looper sometimes I wish there'd be a few jokes or some sort of joy.
The MCU movie toe that line pretty well and that's why they're a success. The DCU movies don't.

Allan Quatermain may fit the bill, though I'm not sure there's ever been a great film adaptation other than the obvious influences on Indiana Jones.
quote:
The character of Allan Quatermain has been portrayed in film and television by Richard Chamberlain, John Colicos, Sean Connery, Cedric Hardwicke, and Patrick Swayze. Stewart Granger also played Quatermain in the 1950 Hollywood film adaptation of King Solomon's Mines, which was directed by Compton Bennett. None of the above works portray Haggard's Quatermain accurately in age, appearance, or character. Some even give his name erroneously as "Quartermain."[citation needed] Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold is a film released in 1987 which is freely adapted from the plot of Haggard's 1887 novel. He was also featured in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, released in 2003, where he served as the team leader and a mentor and father-figure to American Secret Service agent Tom Sawyer, and the 2008 direct-to-DVD Allan Quatermain and the Temple of Skulls. In 2010, it was announced that Sam Worthington would portray the character in an upcoming sci-fi adaptation of King Solomon's Mines.[3]

I remember liking the Allen Quartermain movies from the 80s but then again I was about 7 at the time. Sharon Stone looked hot in those at least.
