Preacher tells the story of Jesse Custer, a preacher in the small Texas town of Annville. Custer is possessed by an alien/supernatural entity.
Driven by a strong sense of right and wrong, Custer begins to discover the truth about his new powers. They allow him, when he wills it, to command the obedience of those who hear and comprehend his words. He is joined by his old girlfriend Tulip O'Hare, as well as a hard-drinking Irish vampire named Cassidy.
This a modified/abbreviated version of the comic synopsis.
Now take the synopsis above and imagine it as a collaborative project between Tarantino and Sam Raimi with creative input from the Coen brothers.

I watched the last episode and enjoyed it. I was a little lost since I know nothing about the comic and I missed the 1st episode

I read that wiki synopsis, but still find myself wondering what the hell is going on.

I also have the books. The show is pretty good for only being a couple of episodes into the series. Of course it's not the exact same as the books, but the show isn't horrible. If I were you, I'd at least give it a look since it's still early in the episodes.
