How did splinter become a rat?
According to the cartoon he was a human who interacted with rats and the original movie a rat who interacted with humans.
I've never read a comic book about this but it seems the cartoon had it right as it would explain the turtles and how they evolved in a sense.

The cartoon was more accurate to the comics. He was a human who trained with Shredder in Japan. Shredder screwed him over and he was exiled. He ended up living in the sewers. Some kid dropped some turtles down there and he made friends with them. The mutagen spilled and they all got some on them.

Yeah that is the take I got from the cartoon but watching the original movie now on Amazon Prime and it made me question this.

He belonged to someone who was feuding with Shredder's family, Shredder killed Splinter's owner out of revenge.
Splinter fled and ended up in the sewers. The mutagen from the Daredevil canister changed the turtles and Splinter into their anthropomorphic forms.
Some of the movies and toons veered away from the comic origin.

Looking at the wiki now at he had a bunch of different origins.
This must be the comic version I'm thinking of. I know I read it after I saw the cartoon.

I love the scene when he is in his cage mimicking his master's ninja training.

In the comics reboot (also written by Kevin Eastman) he changed it up some.
Splinter and his four sons were killed by Shredder and later reincarnated basically as the turtles and rat. I like this version a little better....since Kevin Eastman wrote both I'll assume he agreed the original origin story could use an improvement.
