The drama didn't climax with the Strauss hearings. The climax of the movie was when Robb was interrogating Oppenheimer. Strauss's self-satisfied rant against him was simply juxtaposed on top of it.

I think 7/10 is a reasonable ranking. Although by IMDB standards I think something in the 7s would be considered "very good" and I think that's about right.
It's well done. About as much as you can do with a biopic. I think the political saga is interesting and also well done, but there is a limit to how many times I'll want to rewatch that.
One thing I do like about Nolan movies is that even in the less complex substantive storylines (arguably Dunkirk, Oppenheimer) there are still a lot of issues and items to wrestle with that keeps me from getting bored with them.
It's well done. About as much as you can do with a biopic. I think the political saga is interesting and also well done, but there is a limit to how many times I'll want to rewatch that.

I mean a huge chunk of the movie was about the Manhattan Project itself. the actual logistics and clearance issue.
the relationship with the lover is significant in all that because Oppenheimer, the father of the bomb, almost got booted off the project because he went off and had an affair with a card carrying communist DURING the Manhattan Project.
but the stakes are explicitly stated, multiple times. Oppenheimer talks about the stakes for jews, he talks about how far ahead the Germans would be. they talk about how they’re researching heavy water and how we caught up to the Germans. Then the twist is we beat germany right around the time we develop these bombs.
I would say the concerns about the Nazis were heavily emphasized because the average viewer knows we dropped the bomb on Japan but may not know that our first concern was Germany.
then the last 3rd of the movie is dealing with Oppenheimer’s reaction to the use of bombs and the nuclear arms race.

only explanation you gave was downplaying the importance of the plot. except I didn’t downplay the plot. The plot was the life of Robert Oppenheimer, not the Manhattan project. It seems most people missed the plot.

there is a short bit about him becoming a quantum physicist (mostly to explain his involvement in the project)
Then there is a huge bit about them making the bomb
then the shakeout of having made atomic weapons and his eventual booting from the atomic program.
We don’t really see him till he gets that award after he’s somewhat indicates.
It’s not like it’s 20
minutes of the manhattan project and 3 hours of him riding a horse in new mexico.

It's really difficult to say his sympathies toward communism were downplayed when the film goes out of its way to show how he ran in communist circles, read communist literature, supported communist causes, and was suspected of communist activities by multiple government agencies.
