New Ghostbusters is Officially a Flop

With a $144 million production budget and an estimated $100+ million ad campaign, the movie has only made around $122 million in it's 3rd week. It also trending at 7th in the box office and behind something called "Lights Out."
The international market for the movie has also been basically nonexistent. It wasn't even allowed to be shown in China because 1. There is some old communist ban on showing ghost movies and 2. The Chinese film commission could've approved it but they said there was no audience for it. Hmm, I wonder why??
Here is an article containing some more details about the movies failure and sequel hopes. LINK

Spending $144 million on a movie that can’t play China (for political reasons) is a recipe for disaster, especially when the gender switch prospect was seen by many as politically correct within the film’s country of origin. Now take the “PC” accusations here, and amplify them in nations with worse human rights records than the U.S. That cuts down a great deal of the foreign market that could make an expensive movie like this one successful.
Regardless of how studios might feel about making political and social change, they’re unlikely to get behind a film that is behind the proverbial 8-ball from the outset in an age when Hollywood is marketing more and more to foreign audiences.

Based on some of the reviews I've read, the decision to claim its critics were motivated by a dislike of women in general (rather than motivated by remakes of beloved childhood films) was a very conscious one to try and up domestic interest and quash criticism.
My question is - did this mitigate some of the damage of a sub-par product? Or on the balance did it do even more damage? Marketing it as a social advocacy issue rather than just an entertaining movie seems like a very unusual strategy - especially when science fiction or fantasy nerds as a whole are disproportionately men (perhaps the people buying toys are also very disproportionately men or boys as well?)
On the balance I just wonder if they shouldn't have marketed it as a fun summer "sequel" and left overt mentions of gender issues out?

It was a STUPID decision to make that movie.

Who the hell wants to do a BttF remake?

Big foreign markets like China and Russia and others like classic masculine, male led(usually Caucasian) action flicks. I remember hearing once that Denzel movies never do good there because he's black. Whether Hollywood likes it or not...those countries are FAR, FAR more bigoted and sexist than anywhere here in the states, no matter how much they try to push a false narrative.
Which is exactly why at some point they will have to choose money or agenda. The level of pandering now is getting so out of hand that it will cost them financially in the international market. Even Star Wars did not do very well in China. Either the studios will have to tone down their bullshite or China will start poaching big name American stars and put them out of business.

If I'm not mistaken, the China version of the Star Wars TFA poster had Finn much smaller than the original US version. So, yeah.
OML probably has some interesting perspective on this as he spent some time in China.

No more remakes. I'm ready for a re-imagination of remakes.
The prospect is seeing a re-envisioned take on drew Barrymore in the remade Charlie's angels rather compelling.

Has it opened in every market? If so, that's a laughably bad number. I mean, just wow. This was just a dumb idea to begin with. Good luck to the new Ocean's 11 reboot.

What?! Are they seriously making another Ocean's 11?

I think there's still a few big countries it hasn't opened in yet… Russia, France, Germany being the big ones. There's still no way they even break even at a $250 million total investment.
I've also not heard about the Ocean's movie… holy hell… this is ridiculous. Just make a female heist movie if you want… but why associate it with Ocean's??

Supposedly with an all female cast.
Posted on 7/31/16 at 8:48 am to Scruffy
Oh for fricks sake. The original was a Rat Pack movie. The remake had Clooney, Pitt, and Damon. Those movies ooze cool. You can't do that with a female cast.
Just make a heist movie with chicks.

Yes, it's going to be called Ocean's 8. Supposedly they got Sandra Bullock and Kate Blanchett already locked up.

China also only brings in a certain amount of foreign movies every year.
Their movie industry imports were nonexistent in 1984 so there is no nostalgia factor for this film as well.
It would make no sense to "waste" bringing Ghostbusters there when there is no built in audience for it.

That probably would have been the smarter, direct play, rather than go the PC/SJW route.
At the end of the day, stupid stunt casting remains stupid stunt casting. Unless the rest of the product is fantastic, it's tough to overcome the admission that, "We got nothing for you guys, so here's an all-girl reboot of Ghostbusters."

Just cause you cover a turd in glitter doesn't change the fact it's still a turd
