LINK

Paul Dano
Giancarlo "Gus Fring" Esposito
Tilda Swinton

Most importantly, presented by Bong Joon Ho, director of Snowpiercer, Memories of a Murder, Mother, and The Host (each being masterpieces, IMO). It takes a lot for me to be legit excited about a movie, but this one has got me damp in the pants despite just an OK trailer.

So weird and fantastic looking. I like the way that it is different. I'll give it a watch.

Damn, Dano and Bong Joon working on the same movie is incredible, even if the story doesn't look particularly compelling.

This movie is mostly bad so I'll lead with

The Good:

- The CGI is amazing. Okja interacts with people and the environment a lot and 99% of the time it's so good Okja looks like an actual living creature. The 1% where it's not perfect it's not bad, you just can tell it's CGI.

- Mija, the little girl that is Okja's best friend is pretty good in her role.

The Bad:

- Jake Gylenhall. He gives a cartoonish over the top performance. He dragged the movie down every minute he was on screen and his role probably should have been filled by a nameless character actor, but I would imagine Gylenhall attached to the project was good for financing.

- This is very clearly anti-industrial meat propaganda. I do think more people need to think about where their food comes from and have liked documentaries like Food inc, but this one pretty blatantly tries to manipulate people's emotions rather than giving them information. How so? At first I kept wondering why they were calling this thing that looked like a hippo a pig, but as the movie progressed I'm pretty sure the floppy ears and rounded muzzle rather than a snout was meant to remind people of puppies, not hippos.

It's probably worth checking out a few minutes to see the CGI, but the story is not worth sticking around for.
