Netflix is planning to create a new show which will be based on the immensely popular books and video games that make up the Witcher Saga. The games were originally based on a series of eight novels written by Andrzej Sapkowski. Sapkowski stated that:

“I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing."

Sapkowski is usually very strict about adaptations of his novels, so allowing Netflix to produce this is a big step forward for him and the Witcher series as a whole. Tomas Baginski — who has directed the intro movies for all three Witcher games — will direct at least one episode per season.

quote:

Platige Image, a Polish production and visual effects house, will co-produce the show. Executive Producers Baginski and Jarek Sawko have emphasized that some of the books' subtexts will not be lost when the adaptation hits our screens. They stated that:

"There is a moral and intellectual depth in these books which goes beyond genre. It is a story about today and today’s challenges, hidden under a fantasy cover. It is a story about us, about the monster and the hero inside all of our hearts.”

Even if you haven't played the games, this is exciting news for fantasy fans. Could be the next GOT.

I'm definitly a Triss guyl.

Sad thing is there are very few redheads like in Witcher 3 in real-life.

Awesome. The author is a massive douchebag that loathes the games and refuses to acknowledge them as the reason for his success. Hopefully he doesn't whine and cry about the show like he does with the games.

How successful is the author really? Most people who play Witcher 3 probably don't even realize it's based on a series of books.

The games take things in a drastically different direction than the books. He's probably a little angry over some of the creative liberties taken with the story elements.

Interview with Witcher author and Metro author

It's fascinating how different their stance are. Sapkowski is butthurt pussy

quote:

“The belief, widely spread by CDPR, that the games made me popular outside of Poland is completely false,” Sapkowski told Waypoint of The Witcher series. “I made the games popular. All of my translations in the West – including the English one – were published before the first game.”

This is just – factually incorrect? The Witcher released globally on PC in October 2006. The first Witcher book released in English was The Last Wish, which arrived in 2007, and the first novel, Blood of Elves, wasn’t published in English until 2008.

The author has said in the past that The Witcher games have lost him as many book sales as it brought in, and asked about this maintained that it “would be about equal, yes”. “There are more people who have played the games because they read the books,” he added. “That’s my count, but I’m not sure. I never did any studies.”

quote:

"I think that he's totally wrong, and that he's an arrogant motherfricker," says Dmitry Glukhovsky from his Moscow flat, in response to Sapkowski's claim. "Without the gaming franchise, the Witcher series would never get this crazy international readership that it has. And it's not just about the gamers but the gaming press and the buzz it creates, and just the feeling of something great and massive and impressive coming out. This got people hooked. He would remain a local Eastern European phenomenon without this, but he would never break into the West. And the same goes for my Metro books."

A Moscow native, Glukhovsky started writing his first novel, Metro 2033, at the age of 17. He published it online for free five years later. "And it happened so that the game developers were among the first readers," Glukhovsky recalls. "The creative lead of 4A Games, Andrei Proharov, was sent a link to the website by some of his friends, and he read it overnight and thought it was a perfect story for their next game."

I have to assume he's getting a cut of the game sales which should more than make up for the lost book sales. I know the books were super popular in Poland but that's nothing compared to the exposure the games brought. Even the old Polish tv series didn't help.

Actually I believe I read somewhere that he doesn't get much, if any, cut from the success of the games. Which would explain some of the hostility towards the games.

If it's his intellectual property and he doesn't get much from the games, then it sounds like he should be butthurt at himself or his attorney for sucking at business.

He said he didn't remember the details of the deal, but "they brought a big bag of money," and that was good enough for him. And since he didn't expect the project to amount to much, and believed that videogames, in a broad sense, "are stupid" anyway, he signed a cash-up-front deal and sent them on their way. After that, he had no contact with the studio, much less input on the game's development.

quote:

But the real bite is that he can't even take solace from the obviously lucrative royalties, because there are none. "I was stupid enough to sell them rights to the whole bunch," Sapkowski said. "They offered me a percentage of their profits. I said, 'No, there will be no profit at all—give me all my money right now! The whole amount.' It was stupid. I was stupid enough to leave everything in their hands because I didn't believe in their success. But who could foresee their success? I couldn't."

Wow what a dumbass. No wonder he's so bitter.

Here is a quote from a story I read today:
quote:

Sapkowski - who does not profit from the game series - will serve as a creative consultant on the series. “I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories," he explained in a press release, "staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing."

Yep I believe he took straight cash from CD Project Red and not a percentage of the game sales. The Witcher games have sold over 25 million copies and he is still pissed about it. He should be thanking CD Project Red for what they did for his books sales. I loved the first two Witcher books that are short stories based on Geralt and his adventures. Some of the later Witcher books have horrible pacing and at one point after the best part of the books he writes one of the most boring chapters to read through.

Yeah, he hated the games, but it feels more like self-hate at not going with the royalty option.

He may say "he made the games popular" but I never gave a shite about it till I decided to try Witcher 3. Afterwards, I went back and read up on the various stories from the other games and books.

About the potential show:
Sure, there will be some differences, but the main group of characters exist in both. I also worry it might be filmed in Polish with subtitles (if the Author is as involved as the articles). Much rather it be in English.

Now, to find extremely hot women with some semblance of acting skills and no frills about lack of clothing.

I really need to play Witcher 3 again.

I'll definitely be watching this. I read about his bitterness a while back, but pretty much chalked it up to a lack of business sense on his part. I'm sure he's ok financially even still and is excited about a possible big pay day. I bet he is all in on this project. Funny thing, I dated pretty much only blondes my 1st 2 years of college, the 4 straight red heads my junior and senior years till I realized in grad school, that Asian persuasion is my gig and who I married
