Just finished Malazan Book of the Fallen

It was great at times and grueling to get through at times.

I've read ASOIAF three times so won't read it again for a couple years even though it's my favorite

I've read Dark Tower me really enjoyed it

I've heard Wheel of Time is a good series. Any thoughts from those who have read it?

Any other ideas?

I'm not sure if this is "fantasy", but I've read the Kingkiller series by rothfuss and enjoyed it.

The thing is, that is NOT my genre. I have never been even the tiniest, slightest bit interested in stuff like that. But I really, really dug those 2 books. Very quick reads. There's only 2 books out and the 3rd and final one is coming out some time soon.

The First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie

I just started reading The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski, and it is fricking phenomenal. It's the book series that The Witcher games are based off of. The first 2 books are collections of short stories, and i think the next 3 are all 1 story each. I suggest getting Last Wish and trying it out. the stories are fantastic

Ash Williams grunted.

I've read the first three of WoT, they were enjoyable. I have the next three ready to go, but haven't gotten around to them. I try not to bog myself down with Fantasy.

Oh geez. I don't have enough letters. I'll just give you my favorite fantasy authors, and their best series/books imo.

Morgan Llewellyn and Michael Scott: The Arcana Series. Sadly, they had differences of opinion and never finished the series. However, the first two books are absolutely fun rides, with a very different form of magic than most books I have read. I'll even send you my two copies if you would send him back. Maybe even then. I can get them again at Second & Charles for $2 each.

Stephen R Lawhead: Song of Albion series, or The Pendragon Cycle. My favorite fantasy author. Period. Everything he has written is extremely well done and researched. He doesn't get as much attention as the others because he weaves Christian themes through most of his books.

Terry Brooks: With the show starting shortly, how can you not read al of his Shannara series? I must warn you, with prequels it's 17 or 18 books. His first one started slowly as he learned how to write, but it was fun to watch his progression as a writer as you flipped chapter after chapter. The series was so good. I literally read every single book in the series in less than 1.5 months. Of course I can read a 600 page novel in roughly 4 uninterrupted hours(blame my masters in education having grandmother). I cannot recommend this series enough.

Louis L'amour: Strangely enough, he wasn't actually a western writer, but a fantasy writer. He just told many of his stories in a western setting. The Walking Drum is more historical fiction than straight up fantasy, but in my humble opinion, it's a top 5 book in the genre. If you want a book that is more geared towards pure fantasy. Try The Haunted Mesa, a very underrated book. He dives into the ancient Indian belief that other worlds can be walked into through hidden doorways, and that the Indians originated from a different world.

Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman: Some find their books childish(not really), and that they fall into many standard fantasy tropes(sometimes). I don't care, I love to read their books. The best series, in my opinion, of course is Dragonlance. Others have better writing, some even more original stories. But Dragonlance is the most fun to read through.

I have more, but I think I will leave it at that for now. If I add more I will edit if the thread is still small and on the front page, or bump it if not.

Get to readin!

Avoid WoT. It drags on and on and on and pfft, nothing. I don't get the praise this series gets. All the Sanderson series' are quality. Lies of Locke Lamora series is good. Abercrombie is good. Jim Butcher's codex Aleta series is entertaining, I couldn't get into the Dresden files. Brent Weeks' series are also very good. Lots out there, I'd just avoid WoT.

I enjoyed the first book, but you are correct, they do draggggg. I also found that if you didn't reread regularly, when you got the next book it was sometimes hard to keep all the characters straight because there were so many. A lot of them with very similar names.

Seriously, that name alone hooked me enough to say I will probably want to read them.

Edit: Oh wow, Salvatore. How had I not heard of this series?

Edit #2: Now branded as the 4th, 5th, and 6th parts of The Legend of Drizzt. So I shouldn't feel crazy for not having heard the name after all.

Second that! Anything by R.A. Salvatore is awesome, but if your gonna read the Drizzt Do'Urden series Icewind is the second trilogy in the series. The Dark Elf Trilogy is the first in the bunch. They are all great reads though!

Also the Dragonlance Chronicles by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman is another excellent fantasy series!

Give em a try and I promise ya won't be disappointed

Jack Whyte's Camulod Chronicles is a series of 9 novels. They take a historical and humanistic approach to Merlin, King Arthur, and Camelot. It begins during the Roman occupation of Britannia and ends after Arthur's death.

It was the GREATEST book series I have ever read. It is the BEST modern version of the story.

Lawhead's Pendragon Cycle, sorry buddy.

With Cornwell a close second

I will definitely give these a shot though. Maybe it will change my mind. I just don't see anything beating out Lawhead.

Two of the most popular series are Scott Lynch's Gentleman Bastards and Rothfuss's Kingkiller chronicles.

This is a great choice. Weeks second series is good too, though not finished.

Dresden Files is great. Also, Joe Abercrombie is a must if you haven't read him.

Scott Lynch's Lies of Locke Lamora is fantastic as well.
