I figured he would have mentioned something about radio talk at light speed.

He needs to realize that Star Wars is just fantasy.

I can usually get past all the science fantasy stuff in Star Wars, but when Starkiller Base destroyed Coruscant, everyone in the Galaxy can see it just as it happens, when it would be decades if not centuries or millennia before they would see it. Even if Coruscant was as close as Mars is to us, it would take up to 20 minutes in order for them to see it and not instantly. That was the one thing I had a hard time letting JJ get away with.

But that was retarded on what NGT said. It's a ball for god's sake. Try it on a beach sometime and I bet you can roll it.

I like Neil Degrasse Tyson, but he's starting to remind me of Bill Nye.

That is why Ph.D.s should stick to their field of knowledge.

Wouldn't it matter what's controlling the rotation of the sphere?

Never been impressed innthebleast with Tyson.

I actually lived for awhile with some ESA astrophysicists. Smart people but I'd be damned if i wasn't more up to date on astrophydical discoveries than they were. Because they spent all day using their calculator and I'd read 10-12news articles on the train home so I could be able to talk with them about their work.

It amazes me how much praise Bill Nye gets. People act like he is some accomplished scientist when all he did was host a damn kids show. He's a fricking moron.

Reading the watered down reports of could-be-discoveries in something like the New York Times and reading finalized research articles published in academic journals are completely different things. The scientist isn't necessarily going to read the non-research publications. The latest potential findings from LHC and CERN are a good example of this.

Also, to delve into the topic of physics meeting science fantasy in the Star Wars universe, ion engines operate by accelerating individual particles for gradual acceleration over time. Even with two ion engines, or Twin Ion Engines if you will, a craft wouldn't be be accelerating then maneuvering and changing directions at high speeds. Add the lack of adequate lifting surfaces, and TIE fighters would simply drop out of the sky in an atmosphere.

he makes the assumption that bb8 is a smooth metal sphere and then makes his conclusion. He has no idea of BB8's coefficient of friction, or what material is on the surface. He just assumes and doesn't even realize he is making an unfounded assumption. This is a problem for scientists and humans in general. But he believes himself to be the smartest man in the room or on Twitter, and then he puts his foot in his mouth. It's certainly not the first time.

There's also the tiny detail that BB8 is largely a practical effect.

No. There's no indication that TIE fighters get their lift via lifting surfaces like on a fixed wing. In fact, they just can just hover in mid air. Lots of vehicles in Star Wars have always done this.
