Westerns are a forgotten and missed genre to me. I love a good western. 3:10 to Yuma was the last good modern day western that I have seen. I may have missed some that have come out.

But we were talking in our office just now about which actors should be cast in a starring roles in a good old fashioned, violent, action western movie. I never saw The Magnificent Seven. I started it, but didn't take to it. Maybe I need to give it another try.

My choices: (first 3 anyway, can't think of good examples of more just yet)

Finishing up my, I forget how many times, rewatch of Justified right now in the final season. It's basically a western and Olyphant is incredible in it. Obviously he was awesome in Deadwood. Though for some reason, the guy has never made a dent in the movies.

I actually think Brad Pitt could pull a Western off.

Watch Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai first, then M7.

I enjoy Kurt Russel in his western roles. Check out Bone Tomahawk. It was released after 3:10 and deserves mention.

Yeah, I'm trying to keep this list to younger actors for the action. Actors like Kurt Russel, Jeff Bridges, even Duvall could be in it but as limited support roles as the older generation. I would want some big time older names to help anchor the movie.

I just got around to seeing Fassbender's western "Slow West." Damn good movie.

And I confess that I refused to watch Jonah Hex based on principle, but I finally gave it a real try and was impressed with Fassbender there as well.

Considering he pulled off the lead role in one of the great, most underrated Westerns of the 21st century, I would hope so.

Jon Bernthal would be great as a lead in a Western. He's been in Sicario and Wind River already in supporting roles.

If you consider Hostiles a Western then that was a good one. My list:

Jon Bernthal
Christian Bale
Tom Hardy
Benicio Del Toro
Josh Brolin

That is a really good idea I never would have thought of. He's definitely got the acting chops and that cigarette tarnished face and voice would be great in a gritty old fashioned western
