The 'city of men' comment I made in the 'overrated films' got me to thinking about this.

Let me explain; have you ever enjoyed a movie immensely that goes completely against what you believe either politically, morally or religiously?

I'll start: I absolutely loved "Dancer in the Dark" (with Bjork) which is about the most anti-capitalism/pro socialism movie ever. Its about as subtle as a 100 pound concrete brick being dropped onto your head.

Yet...I love this movie. I love the soundtrack..I love what a freak Bjork plays (methinks she's not really acting) and the atmosphere was excellent. This is a musical (of sorts) but for some reason I have to dig this thing out every so often & watch it again.

Its very artistic in a way that most of the blatant propoganda hollywood shoves down our throat to chastise us for not caring about global warming or the holocaust or helping the poor black people can't possible match.

What's your guilty pleasure?

For real though, I thought Milk was a good film.

i consider myself somewhat nihilistic and politically apathetic, so I guess any movie that takes a stance stands in difference to what I (don't) believe.

The political commentary of V for Vendetta is infantile at best, but I really like the movie. And the idea of a terrorist plot is the best way to overthrow facism is also silly, especially the way he tortures Natalie Portman.

Was going to post this as well. Loved the movie, but had sort of an uneasy feeling about it

I liked "V for Vendetta" as well, although I think many people are confused regarding it's political message.

There are some movies that I don't agree with politically that I enjoy watching. My biggest problem with political movies, though, isn't the message behind it but rather how the director often focuses so much on the political message that the actual story suffers.

Pretty much why I don't like them irregardless of whether or not I agree with them politically. For instance with a movie I pretty much march lock step with politically, Blood Diamond could have been a great movie but they were so concerned with showing that conflict diamonds and child soldiers are bad (no fricking shite) that what was an interesting setting and actually fairly entertaining plot were bogged down with unnecessary montages and an unsatisfying ending outside of Sierra Leone.

I didn't say I didn't like it. I said that is could have been better if it didn't feel that it needed to give a "message" and just told its story.

I always enjoy when a thread on this board is started with some actual original substance. For me, it would have to be Robert Bresson's films such as Diary of a Country Priest and Au Hasard Balthazar. Also I think The Decalogue by Kieslowski is one of the greatest to happen to cinema ever.

I'm not really a religious guy but he tells these religious fables that are really deep and affectionate.

I'd have to say Dancer In the Dark and Lilya 4-Ever are the two most depressing movies ever made.
