Star Wars reinvented Sci-Fi when there hadn't been a good Sci-Fi film in almost 10 years.

You disagree with Metropolis as the most visionary science fiction movie of all time?

I don't know, I've never seen it. I'd go with 2001 because I have seen it, and most of the film going world consistently ranks it #1.
But this is just such a typical kind of opinion you would have on any subject. You try so hard to be different

Star Wars isnt Sci-Fi. Its a Space Fantasy.

Sci-Fi film in almost 10 years.
it's an adventure serial in space. Movies were pretty cynical in the 70s especially in the sci fi genre...soylent green really is a great example.
star wars is definitely the most revolutionary film because of special effects; however empire was the more ambitious movie because of yoda and the city above the clouds (visionary) and definitely was the more influential movie as so many films in the genre that followed it completely owe the look and style to empire
it's a toss up. I don't think we have the light hearted sci fi and fantasy movies of the 80s without star wars, but so many great movies are directly influenced by empire (wrath of khan, e.t., the thing, and on and on and on)
It's hard to answer the OP. There are definitely some movies that fit that bill.
2001
Empire
Blade Runner
Jurassic Park
These were all huge jumps in visual effects which is an important aspect of the genre. empire is my favorite obviously, but the movies we see today really are because of Jurassic park. No one had seen anything like it, and the animatronics, etc. It was bonkers. Your jaw was on the ground. I imagine those who saw star wars in theaters or 2001 felt the same way
there's no right answer to the OP

It is Metropolis or 2001.
Everyone else is vying for second place.
For television, no question it is Star Trek: The Original Series.

What...the...frick?
I hope you realize that Metropolis is widely regarded as an absolute masterpiece as well as the first legitimate science fiction movie.
That isn't an odd opinion...it's fact.
:mindblown:

I think its a subgenre of Fantasy. Other than being in space, what makes it Science Fiction?

This is going to sound nuts at first, but Avatar.
Simply based on what Cameron and WETA were able to create. They literally invented a way to capture video within "another world". I mean not just tell the computer what to do and it create it, writing lines of code for each visual, creating a stiff scene. They created a scene with VC of actors, place the video of them acting within a digital world, played it, and then shot it from any angle they wanted with a camera held by a man walking through the digital scene. Then digitally have the characters do something else and shoot it again, basically like multiple takes. The technical aspect of Avatar is mind boggling. Combine that with the VFX and you have a movie that from a visual and technical aspect changed the future of movie making. Im not even coming close to describing everything they created to make that movie.
What Jackson has done with WETA is amazing.
