New documentary on HBO premiers tonight. There was a great Sword and Scale podcast covering this, and know the back story it could be very good. Should be some Louisiana/Katrina connections as it is a pretty central part of the story.

If you don't know the back story, I'd probably not read up on it. Could ruin the entertainment value of the doc.

Here is a trailer.

I just watched it. What an evil fricking bitch (the mom). Her daughter should have been allowed to walk with zero punishment. She served her time when that count was alive. And her father was a worthless POS too. How clueless can one hillbilly possibly be?

Seriously though. What a twisted and sad story.

I haven't watched it or read up on it, but sounds like it was a case of Munchausen by proxy. Was that what happened?

That is exactly what happened.

Shaved her head, and made her believe that her legs didn't work, so she was in a wheelchair for a while.

Some blame should fall on the father, but when the mother has custody, and her and Gypsy kept moving further and further away, what is he supposed to do? Move with them?

When he was told that his daughter had a debilitating, crippling disease, and was he really supposed to question it, especially when Dee Dee made it look like Gypsy truly had a disease?

That is a tough spot. He seemed like a pretty good dude in the doc, and he seems to genuinely want to be there for her, not to mention the tremendous guilt he clearly carries.

I think that he should've been more weary knowing what type of person Dee Dee was, but you don't really expect someone to be that evil.

Really sad stuff. I hope Gypsy can lead a relatively normal life when she gets out, even though you have to believe that it will be tough for her. She seems pretty intelligent, and good-hearted, despite the mental chains that she was shackled with her whole life. Hopefully her father will start a college fund for her for when she gets out, if he hasn't already.

Not sure why, but I laughed when they discussed this in their South Lafourche accent

Dee Dee was an absolute monster. Stole from everyone in her family, wanted for fraud, then forced her child to undergo surgeries and a lifetime of misery just for her benefit.

fricking evil. Glad Gypsy only got 8 years.
