Mel Gibson Calls ‘Batman v Superman’ a ‘Piece of S–t’ (Udated)

quote:
“It’s a piece of s–t,” the 60-year-old director told Deadline at the Venice Film Festival. “I’m not interested in the stuff. Do you know what the difference between real superheroes and comic-book superheroes is? Real superheroes didn’t wear spandex. So I don’t know. Spandex must cost a lot.”
“I look at them and scratch my head. I’m really baffled by it. I think there’s a lot of waste, but maybe if I did one of those things with the green screens I’d find out different,” Gibson said. “It seems to me that you could do it for less… You’re spending outrageous amounts of money, $180 million or more, I don’t know how you make it back after the tax man gets you, and after you give half to the exhibitors.”

Mel now shares his thoughts about Marvel
quote:
In an interview with the Washington Post about his new film Hacksaw Ridge, Mel Gibson discussed the violence in his movies and cinema in general. Gibson believes that violence has to almost be a "sporting event" and "ordered chaos." He laments that modern films "use violence without conscience" and primarily used Marvel films as an example of how to do violence poorly. In typical Gibson fashion, he doesn't really mince words about it.
To talk about the violence question, look at any Marvel movie. They're more violent than anything that I've done, but [in my movies,] you give a shite about the characters, which makes it matter more. That's all I'll say.

For this we needed a new thread?

never waste an opportunity to call BvS a piece of shite.

Sounds like he is crapping on all comic book movies though. He needs to follow his own advice and try and make one if he wants to gripe and complain about cost. BvS is a bad example, see if he can match what Marvel is doing.

He's still pissed about not being cast as The Comedian in Terry Gilliam's Watchmen.

He probably shouldn't be the one to say it, but he is not wrong. The comic book movies have been more miss than hit lately. The marvel stuff started strong but the quality is fading. The DC stuff just can't get it's shite together. Wonder Woman will be a disaster. The only one I really have any desire to see is the next Guardians of the Galaxy.
Hollywood could have ridden the comic book movies success for a very long time if they would have gone with a less is more approach. Instead they try to make more and make them faster with quality being an afterthought.

I am not a fan of the super hero genre at all but I believe your statement above to be very accurate.

Only a child would think Gibson is wrong, although if the movie had been just about Batman and Superman, it would have been okay. Not great, but not a piece of shite. Doomsday was a fiasco.

I watched Apocalypto the other day. Pretty good flick.

Once Marvel began to saturate the market, it was no longer a slow and steady wins the race proposition. There's a finite shelf life for any genre craze. Could be a decade, could be a few, but if you're sitting on superhero properties you could find yourself late to the trend and the audience's dollars in your competitor's pocket.
I'm surprised that Fox hasn't been as aggressive as Marvel Studios and Warner. They've got a shite-ton of Marvel properties that they're sitting on. Right now they have Wolverine wrapping up and Deadpool 2 in development. Gambit is still wobbling around. If you want to applaud a studio for showing restraint, give it to Fox.

South Park nailed him as a film maker.
One of my favorite parts of the movie. When they bring in Bay, and Shyamalan, and finally Gibson

By Hollywood did you mean DC?
Marvel has been going strong for almost a decade and it doesn't look to be slowing down.

The man has only made competent films. They achieve everything he sets out to do. Snyder hasn't made a movie on the level of Apocalypto.

Gibson is a very solid director and actor.
He's human garbage as well, but that doesn't negate the first statement.
