This is certainly an odd thing to say—the next film from master director Martin Scorsese will debut on Netflix. Indeed, IndieWire reports that the streaming giant is in the process of closing what’s sure to be a mega-deal to secure the rights to Scorsese’s long-developing gangster pic The Irishman, which reunites the filmmaker with Robert De Niro in the starring role. The film was initially set up at Paramount Pictures, but with news breaking earlier this week that Paramount chairman Brad Grey is on his way out, Scorsese and Co. started looking for other suitors.

And so now Scorsese’s going to Netflix, where he’ll get his full $100 million budget for The Irishman and no doubt final cut. The film is based on the true story of Frank Sheeran, a Teamsters official with ties to the Bufalino crime family who confessed to the murder of Jimmy Hoffa before his death in 2003. Schindler’s List scribe and The Night Of creator Steven Zaillian penned the script, and the film has been percolating for a few years now as Scorsese intends to use CG technology to de-age De Niro and cover large swaths of Sheeran’s life.

Not odd at all. Scorsese, being the hipster he is, has spoken at length how people are too dumb to go go to the movies, and with Silence flopping on a massive scale, i can see why it makes sense to him.

DeNiro isn't exactly a box office draw anymore. This likely would not have been a hit in theaters.

Sounds like Netflix gave him everything he wanted (control and money) vs a wary production landscape that has seen his recent movies disappoint in the box office

I feel like you don't need to spend 100 million to make a mob movie, but what do I know.

The Jimmy Hoffa and teamsters shite is boring.

I'm skeptical.

I agree, that's a really big budget for this type of film. Hollywood budgets have just spiraled out of control.

Are films that open on Netflix and the like eligible for Oscars yet? It seems they may have to rethink the rules on eligibility.

The de aging technology probably drove the cost up.

They will put it in the bare minimum amount of theaters like they did with beast of no nation

And then the academy will ignore the movies existance like they did with beast

Why does Scorsese keep having Deniro play an Irishman when he is straight up dago? Looks nothing like an Irishman.

Its really not. Teamsters, mob, Bobby trying to bust him and the mob while Jack and daddy took their money and allowed them to fix the election. You should try reading the book I Heard You Paint Houses

This is a much better title than
The Irishman ( )
Why didn't they keep the book title for the film?

Yeah, that's a great title. It was what Hoffa first said to the Irishman, and its basically saying, i heard you do contract hits (i'm guessing you already knew that but for others).

They can release it in a small number if theaters for like a week and become eligible for Oscars. That's what espn did with the OJ doc and now they're probably going to win an Oscar for it.
