I'm halfway through a re-watch and the things that stand out so far are:

1) the writing. Not only does P.T. have so much to say, the way he weaves so many characters to seamlessly and smoothly is breathtaking

2) the acting is superb, no sublime. Everyone hits their notes perfectly

3) Tom Cruise is a very good actor and has big balls to play parts like this

4) John C Reilly is a boss

5) etc....etc...etc...

My favorite movie of all time.

Blows my mind my mind. Haven't seen anything like it before or since.

Big fan. Everyone does a bang up acting job. Great direction. Great writing.

Never quite understood the frogs.

This is better than--though not as funny as--Boogie nights. And much superior to Punch Drunk Love. Which I love.

Jason Robards may give the best performance in the whole film

He was great but come on man.

Cruise killed it. Going from cocky to angry to unhinged with anger then grief.

Respect the cock!

I feel it is his best overall film. I need to buy the bluray version. Haven't seen in several years but it is such a complete masterpiece.

I have never seen it. I was pretty young when it came out and I remember the trailer was pretty weird because I was about 10. I will order it off of Amazon on Blu Ray tonight.

I mean you could say it about so many of his roles but certainly one of Philip Semour Hoffman's best performances as well. Like others have said though all the acting is top notch. Luis Guzman, Julianne Moore, Crusie, John C. Riley, Robards, both the main white kid and the black kid that raps were outstanding in their roles as well. And William H. Macy's character.

Philip Baker Hall is also phenomenal.

Sorry I really love this film.

I think there's a lot to appreciate about Magnolia, but I wouldn't say I like it. I'll never understand the frogs. I think it's such a pretentious scene.

I do think PTA is a master, Boogie Nights is a top five movie for me.

The raining frogs is just to show that anything is possible maybe?

It has actually rained frogs before in places. Has also rained fish, among other flightless animals.

Google it.

Only big time Anderson movie I don't like (I don't count Punch Drunk Love)... I never got the hype on this movie. It's way too long, Anderson even said so a couple years ago.

I always thought the Robards, Cruise, Hoffman storyline was the only good storyline, mainly because the acting of those 3 was incredible. I thought would've been an outstanding movie on its own. I don't see how this is close to the level of There Will Be Blood or Boogie Nights. I'm not bashing the movie, I just don't think it's as good as his other work.

Check that ego -- come off it -
I'm the prophet -- the professor -
Ima teach you 'bout The Worm -
Who eventually turned to catch wreck
with the neck of a long time oppressor
And he's runnin from the devil, but the
debt is always gaining
And if he's worth being hurt, he's worth
bringin' pain in -
When the sunshine don't work, the Good Lord
bring the rain in.

The trailer is actually what got me to watch it. All the cast sitting in the dentist chair introducing themselves? LINK

I found Magnolia when I was knew into film. The trailer captured my interest. The movie breezed by at lightning pace too.

I own Magnolia on Criterion.
