Trilogies that fell to the curse:
Star Wars Return of the Jedi
Spiderman 3
Iron Man 3
Dark Knight Rises
Back to the Future Pink Cowboys
X-men 3
Trilogies that broke the curse:
Men In Black
Toy Story
The man with no name
Star Wars Return of the Jedi
Spiderman 3
Iron Man 3
Dark Knight Rises
Back to the Future Pink Cowboys
X-men 3
Trilogies that broke the curse:
Men In Black
Toy Story
The man with no name

Both of these are very good movies. While flawed, I would not put them in the curse category.
The rest are bad to terrible, so they certainly fit the bill. X-Men 3 is an odd duck though, because that was due to the producer getting too involved and ruining a good thing. Singer would've knocked it out the park.

I'm not a fan of MIB, so I would not put this in here. TS I have never seen.
MWNN... third movie is the best of the bunch, and that's high praise.
I would add Godfather 3 to the curse list though. What a travesty

They frick up a perfect trilogy though, so I think that still qualifies.

Die Hard and Mission Impossible are series where the third movie is better than the second.

Since Commissioner Gordon and Alfred are played by the same characters through, then I will consider Batman Forever and Batman & Robin as part of the series that Burton started. While that is 4 movies and not a trilogy, I think it's safe to say that both of those movies fell to the curse. It's a classic case of the studio probably interfering a little too much to capitalize on the success of the first two movies and trying to squeeze as much money out of it as possible.

I like back to the future 3. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was the best of the trilogy.

Except Batman Forever is better than Batman Returns.

Escape from the Planet of the Apes is better than Beneath the Planet of the Apes.

The third Bond film, Goldfinger, is considered one of the best of the series.
Return of the King won best picture.
Friday the 13th part 3 is considered one of the best.
The Last Crusade and The Search for Spock are generally more highly regarded than others in their respective series.
Godfather 3 is part of the curse, though.

Also all indications are pointing that War for the Planet of the Apes will break this curse as well.

Well I think they all suck, but at least Returns somewhat resembled the first one in terms of setting and mood. I don't know what the hell they were thinking with Forever.

I like that movie. I don't care what anyone says. I thought both Carrey and Jones did great jobs with their villains.

The studio wanted the third Batman film to be a lighter affair after the dark bleakness that was Batman Returns. The dark nature of that film cost the studio money at the box office and at the toy store as parents didn't want anything to do with the sequel. I remember the five-year-old version of me begging to see that movie. I also wanted the new toys that were associated with it. But my parents refused to indulge me. This after having let me see Batman '89 - which we owned on video.

what pixar was able to do with my generation is amazing.
I was in college, loved Toy Story growing but became too cool and kinda forgotten about it in Middle/high school. Then I am sitting in the theater when that opening scene starts had the biggest "oh damn, the gang is back"

Does Iron Man 3 belong? I feel like the curse doesn't apply if the second movie sucks, too.

I know people dont care for Matrix 2, but I really didnt think it was all that bad.
Matrix 3 is terrible.
Matrix 3 is terrible.

No. God no.

At least Batman Forever was a Batman movie. Batman Returns was a Tim Burton movie that just happened to feature Batman.

While none of these in bold are the best in their series, they are all really good, entertaining movies no matter what the sophisters on the internet say.

Absolutely agree. I would argue that each of these may be the best in their respective franchises. Men in Black III was a huge surprise and an awesome movie to boot.
