Harry's toast to George at the end gets me every single time.

Definitely the GOAT movie wife. Gorgeous, loving, loyal and supportive.

Passes up the chance to marry a wealthy man (Sam Wainwright) to marry George, who hasn't really ever given her much thought. Gives up her dream honeymoon so George can save the Building and Loan from a Great Depression bank run. In turn works with Bert and Ernie to give George a good honeymoon. Remodels the house and turns it from dilapidated mansion to nice family home. Raises the kids singlehandedly while George works himself to exhaustion at the B&L. Gives every one of the home buyers in Bailey Park a gift basket the day they move in. Serves sandwiches and coffee to mobilizing troops passing through town on the trains during WWII. Puts up with George's outburst on Christmas Eve, and then ends up saving the B&L and George's arse by going around town collecting money.

I've been in love with Mary Bailey since I was a kid

Like somebody else said, I do wonder what grouchy tree guy had to say to him later. I mean, his Dad planted it and all.

love the flick, have seen it so many times I am taking a break from it.

There's another Frank Capra movie made just the year before that has similar vibes: "You Can't Take It With You" Also a fun movie with a message. Many of the same actors, including James Stewart, Lionel Barrymore and a couple of others as I recall. Well worth a watch for any fan.

George Bailey was a sub-prime lender who needed a public bailout due to poor management and oversight of his employees.

The S/L should have been taken over.

/I like Jimmy Stewart and heart of this movie but he was a poor business man.

george bailey was far from the perfect business man. that is true, but hes far from the idiot you are inferring

he was the only financial institution not backed by potter in all of bedford falls that didnt go under during the runs

bailey park expanded under his tenure and they ate into potters market share.

while yes, he was lending sub prime mortgage loans, there is no evidence to suggest that a large number of people were defaulting on their mortgages. and remember, this was during the depression when there was the largest mortgage crisis in US history prior to the one that took place in the late 2000s. and while he was pretty much doing exactly what caused the crisis, there is nothing to suggest that the crisis affected him to a point where he was in danger of going under. that takes some talent

so all in all, yes, he was far from the perfect business man as seen in his far too myopic view and decision to turn down sam's (hee haw) offer to join him in the plastics business as well as letting his personal feelings get in way of him taking a terrific job opportunity from potter. but he wasnt incompetent and actually showed some real talent in numerous areas
