Wasn't quite sure which board to do this. This one seemed most fitting.
I'm hoping to get a recommendation. I really like a lot of classic novels like War of the Worlds, Time Machine, and I just finished reading Journey to the Center of the Earth for about the 10th time. Also, I've read pretty much everything Tolkien related. I preordered Beren and Luthien, so I'm looking for something to read in the meantime.
Some that I'm considering are The Forever War or the Witcher series (not sure if I want to start a series though). Or something else sci-fi or fantasy. I don't get to read as much as I used to, so my literature knowledge isn't up to date.
What ya got? TIA

You like something that feels classic+fantasy?
Kingkiller Chronicles most definitely.

I'll look into that one. I need to get a list going. Need to get my money's worth out of this kindle.
ETA: Just read a little synopsis. Yeah, that seems right up my alley. I will definitely read that one.

I always recommend Bernard Cornwell. His Saxon series set in medieval England during the Viking invasions are great reading.
His King Arthur series is a gritty version with a more historic feel but with a dash of ambiguous magic. Wonderful trilogy.
I like John Gardner's book Grendel. It's the Beowulf story told from Grendel's POV. It's an interesting and thoughtful examination into the scattered mindset of a medieval monster.

Might want to knock out The Dark Tower series before Hollywood makes a shitshow out of it...if you haven't already.

I recently watched The Last Kingdom on Netflix and wanted to read the books. Can't believe I forgot about that one. I like stuff like that too. Thanks for reminding me. Another one added to the list.

My mom's Stephen King collection is what got me into reading when I was younger. I was probably way too young to be reading some of that stuff. But she had so many King novels I just had to know what the fuss was about.
I think I only read the first couple of books in the Dark Tower series though. Definitely not the more recent ones.

If you like classic sci-fi adventure you may try looking at E. R. Burroughs Mars books. They are a little hokey but I enjoyed them up through A Warlord of Mars. He has some other short series worth reading like the Mucker and a series about a prehistoric island. All hokey and mildly racist by today's standards but fun reads. If you like HG Wells you should like him. Similar but more swords and sandles is Robert Howard who did Conan. His stuff is less hokey and more gritty.
And you can read all these books free on Project Gutenberg Australia.

I almost hesitate to rec this because the wait for the 3rd book is painful. Such a great series.

Yeah it's my all time favorite books. Season 1 covered the first two books. There are 9 total. If you liked the show then you'll love the books.

By far the biggest thing in Fantasy outside of Game of Thrones.
Being developed by some pretty big time people for Film/TV.
I just hope he eventually releases book3.
If you like SciFi The Expanse series is pretty good imo. First book is Leviathan Wakes

I also LOVE the Gentleman Bastards sequence by Scott Lynch. First book is the Lies of Locke Lamora.
Warning: There are 3 books so far of an estimated 7, 4 is supposed to come out sometime this year...but Lynch has many issues and they do take awhile to come out. Not Rothfuss or Martin level delays but he does take a bit if time.

I just went through the audiobook versions of Neil Gaiman's American Gods and Neverwhere. I'd read both a few years ago as well. American Gods is particularly good. Both are fantasy I guess. American Gods is a throwback to the kind of stuff Roger Zelazny used to write when he was at his best so I'll throw out Lord of Light by Zelazny as well. Not the easiest sci-fi read but probably my favorite. There were at least two clear references to it in American Gods.
I also really like Neal Stephenson - Cryptonomycon, The Diamond Age, Anathem in particular. Others are good as well. Cryptonomicon is historical fiction, the other two are sci-fi.

Forever War is a great one. Pretty quick read too. You should definitely knock it out:

I've heard about it for a long time but never read it. I think I'll tackle it first. Thanks
