Is there a greater show of talent than Cagney in Yankee Doodle Dandy?

Gene Kelly in Singin' in the Rain comes to mind, but I agree.
When you think of the old days - all those fellas had to have a certain degree of talent - most did stage work, which involved lots of musical numbers. Chico Marx was a pretty talented cat, but he never had to carry a movie. And wasn't much of a dancer.
The only modern examples I can think of are Gregory Hines and Steve Martin and not sure either could match Cagney - neither are as good an actor - Hines probably a better dancer and Martin is a world-class banjo player - but you never saw either combine all their talents in a single performance the way Cagney does it YDD.

I was going to say Kelly in Anchors Away.

The scene with Jerry is definitely influential, but I submitted Singin' in the Rain because he had to carry more of that movie than he did Anchors Away - he was supporting Sinatra in that one, while he had O'Connor supporting him in Singin' in the Rain.
Outside of, perhaps, Music Man, he was in some of the most guy-friendly musical films of the Golden Age of Hollywood.

He gave me an appreciation for tap dancing, that's for sure.

I saw my first Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire movie the other night, and that guy wasn't a bad actor was graceful, and could dance. I was surprised by how hot Ginger Rogers was.

Cagney tapping down those tall stairs in the White House at the end of the film... amazing.

Michael Jackson stole all his dance moves from Fred Astaire.

IYAM Fred Astaire's best performance was in a non music, non dancing role in On The Beach. He plays a scientist dealing with the guilt of having helped bring on a nuclear apocalypse.
