Sandlot is a great choice too as are the others mentioned. Just thinking about what encompasses "America" in popular thought/culture.

This. I mean yeah it's alright and it's fun, but coming of age movies...Stand by Me is better. Stand By Me is all time good. Goonies is better too.

Mighty Ducks and the Karate Kid might be better sports movies.

I'd also add Footloose, American Graffiti, and Rocky I & II.
