I was wondering about this the other day in a conversation with someone about original content for things like Hulu/Netflix/etc. How can you tell how popular those shows are without knowing the viewership numbers?

It is 100% in NF's own interest to not reveal shitty numbers.

They didn't release the HoC numbers to my knowledge and everyone knows that's a success. It could be that they've invested some dollars and are still working out details to the model before they know how to run it efficiently. Nothing wrong with that.

And I honestly believe that the boom in original series like these are because they're new, and their populatiry will fade a bit over time. Obviously there will be exceptions with shows that are legitimately good, but I think a lot of people are just excited because these are some of the first real shows that have "network feel" to them that people can watch without being tied to cable subscriptions. I could be wrong, but I'd bet shows like this are the most popular among the "cut the cord" crowd because it's basically like their new, shiny toy.

That would imply though the crowd will just give up on these shows. First, if they are "legitimately good," which is the overall goal, then would you really think people give up on them?

Secondly, what's the retention rate of New Fall Shows on Cable Networks? Close to 50% or so right? Maybe even lower. Netflix has hits with HoC, AD, Orange, Peaky Blinders, Lillyhammer, and probably had a good response for the Killing. Daredevil looks to knock it out of the park again. They've had misfires with Hemlock and MP, maybe. We don't even know. That's not a bad rate at all.

Rather than a shiny new toy, this is just a company taking risks and seeing how it pans out. Any new show, Netflix or Cable/Broadcast, can be viewed as a shiny new toy.

The benefit to that pacing isn't to make it last longer, it's to have more people on the same schedule so there's more discussion and buzz about a show.

This only benefits advertisers and the companies that rely on ad revenue. Netflix doesn't run commercials.

Watched 2 or 3 episodes and couldn't do it any more

I definitely struggled to get through the first few episodes, but I stuck with it and ended up really enjoying it.

This is just stupid. The more people that want to watch Marco Polo, the more people will get NetFlix subscriptions. Marco Polo's "season" has come and gone with barely a mention here. I mentioned GoT earlier in the thread and how people talking about it every day for 4 months a year for 3 years piqued my interest and got me to finally watch the show. Similar word of mouth just isn't going to happen with a binge release. Maybe Marco Polo is bad, but even lesser shows get season long threads on here that are popular a few days a week for several months.

I'm don't get your point. Some extemely popular shows (Lost, GOT, TWD) get extensive threads while others popular shows (NCIS) are rarely discussed. Granted I think that the better the quality, the more likely it will appear here. Even then, shoes like Black Mirror are just gaining major traction here.

Regadess that article was pointless. I'm sure Netflix presents their viewing metrics to people to people who matter (i.e., not us or Screenrant). I'm sure they have data that supports a second season, although they may not follow traditional viewing data given the format (e.g., they don't have overnight ratings) but have their own advantages (e.g., can precisely track who watches every episode). Either way, they probanly aren't going to risk their company to save face on Marco Polo.
