In the Spirit of October: The Horror Renaissance

Since 2010 we've had a plethora of horror films, bending rules, playing with old school techniques, and being just plain good. I don't think we've seen as rich a time of horror as we are since probably about 2008. After Scream helped move Slasher genres along, we've had a steady stream of quality horror and lots of crap. International remakes got in the way for awhile, but then actually Saw helped spurn that second group of film makers- Wan, Whannel, Wingard (what's up with the horror genre and W last names?) etc.. But look at just the last 5 years:
Top 10 Horror Movies Since 2010
1. The Guest
2. It Follows
3. The Conjuring
4. Sinister
5. You're Next
6. Mama
7. Insidious
8. The Innkeepers
9. The Woman in Black
10. The Babadook
Major Movies Just Missing: Let Me In (not horror enough for this list imo), Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, Cabin in the Woods, Evil Dead (Remake), Drag me To Hell, Oculus
Small Movies MIssing: The Pact, The Ward, The Taking of Deborah Logan, Grave Encounters, Starry Eyes, The Conspiracy Silent House, The Sacrament
You have movies like It Follows and The Conjuring being direct descendants of their eras, steeped in film while The Innkeepers and Woman in Black bring back big ghost story scares and The Guest and The Babadook take their tropes in completely different directions form what seems to be the intent. I just watched Mama today and found that really outstanding as a horror fairy tale. Sinister and Insidious are both just great, by the book horrors. High Quality, interesting stories, great gore and scares.
So much great stuff. If you haven't, you should be catching up this month.
(And hopefully Crimson Peak is as good as it looks)

God I want this to be good.
I agree that we've had some good ones lately. I will say that most Judeo-Christian horror flicks (in other words, any one that involves demons) in the modern era are shite. That genre peaked with The Exorcist. The Exorcist is smart and provides a theology that more or less works. So many of them now venture too far into amateur hour land. The last one of that genre that I saw that worked for me (until the end) was The Last Exorcism. But the ending was terribad. I seem to recall there being a possession flick with Anthony Hopkins a few years ago that was pretty solidly mediocre, but that's about the best I can say that for that genre at this point.
ETA: Insidious is awful
ETA2: The Hopkins film was The Rite, and I just fired it up to fall asleep to. I'll see if it maintains my mediocre view or if it's worse. Been a few years.

I would say you have to put 'Let Me In' as well. That is one of the best horror movies of the 2010's period.

I guess I just don't get It Follows. It's shot really well, but I just think it's boring and the characters aren't good. I watched it with 5 other people (4 of which who had never heard of it), and everyone thought it sucked. Pretty solid list otherwise, though I would probably put the last shift on there and give mention to the Canal.

That was kind of the point though. Of course there's always stuff like Kill List, Starry Eyes, etc., I was speaking more to the mainstream being quite good recently.

Why can't horror be funny?
I agree that any top ten since 2010 without CitW on it nullifies its credibility.
Also, Babadook was borderline terrible. I am disappointed to see it in your top ten for sure. It was decently creepy, but the ending was straight up awful, and the majority of the movie wasn't good enough to overcome that IMO.
I need to check out some on your list that I haven't seen yet. I picked up It Follows a few weeks ago, but haven't had a chance to see it yet. I've heard good things though. Also have Innkeepers but haven't watched it.
I liked Black Death. Megan is Missing is pretty fricked up, but not sure that would classify as straight up horror though. Retreat was pretty good, but not sure that'sreally "horror" either.

I just wanted to focus on actually scary movies, of which, Cabin in the Woods is not. It's a farce. A great one, but still a farce and not really meant to be scary.

That's why it's 10. I think I had the right atmosphere to watch it. Like midnight on Friday home alone all the lights off and my puppy being weird. I was spooked enough.

All pretty good movies, particularly Retreat. In that same vein, I enjoyed Honeymoon as well.

I just thought a couple of things with this one: Great atmosphere and a very good haunted house feel. It wasn't the scariest, but it went for mood and nailed it.
The leads could be a tad bit annoying, however.

Yeah, the underground will always thrive because it doesn't need mainstream support, as horror fans are pretty damn loyal and fanatical. It's a genre that will always have something interesting going on, just by the nature of the beast.
I think Freaux's point is that we are seeing an explosion of interesting mainstream horror films. Which, by definition, requires mainstream movies. This isn't just some interesting films passed among the already inducted members of the tribe, these are films that have bubbled up to widespread acceptance.

We're seeing slasher films (You're Next), haunted houses (The Conjuring), possession (Mama), demon stories (Sinister), psychological (The Guest), horror-comedy (John Dies at the End), classic remakes (Evil Dead), and even Gothic throwbacks (Crimson Peak). It's not just found footage films or copies of one popular film. It's really a fun time for horror fans.
I also believe The Babadook is terrible.

Eh, I kinda disagree. I think one thing that makes CitW so great is that it excels both at horror and satire. I think the first half is a pretty legit horror. And even once shite hits the fan, it's still horror, just a different kind (and more funny, like you said).
But that doesn't mean it's not though. I mean, Scream is a "funny horror movie," and is great.

Also, Alien Abduction should definitely be on this list. That movie was awesome.

I second Cocomo. Comedy is intrinsic to horror movies. One of the most common defense mechanisms to being scared is to laugh.
That's right, your buddy watching the horror movie, laughing at it and saying how dumb it is, is likely scared out of his mind, and is trying to compensate.
