Peter O'Toole as T.J. Lawrence is recognized by many as the greatest movie performance of all time. LINK

While O'Toole's total body of work is not at the same level as for instance, Meryl Streep, I tend to agree that that one performance in Lawrence of Arabia was the best of all time; clearly he was made for that role.

There are a lot of "classic" performances I haven't seen (Lawrence and Capote from this thread come to mind), but I'd have to say Brando's performance in On the Waterfront is tops for me until I see something better. I'm sure there are many fine performances worthy of this discussion.

I think the best individual scene is John Cazale's "I'm smart!!" scene when he's sitting in the chair (as Fredo) in The Godfather II.

eta: 1st Runner Up is Traci Lords as "The Devil" in the original and uncut New Wave Hookers.

Al Pacino in The Godfather Part II is the best performance I have ever seen in a movie. Such realistic acting.

I won't try to name a "greatest" performance. But my favorite is Duval in Lonesome Dove. Oh, and I agree that Bogie in African Queen is excellent.

Lorie darlin', life in San Francisco, you see, is still just life. If you want any one thing too badly, it's likely to turn out to be a disappointment. The only healthy way to live life is to learn to like all the little everyday things, like a sip of good whiskey in the evening, a soft bed, a glass of buttermilk, or a feisty gentleman like myself.

He was great as Mac Sledge in Tender Mercies also.

Biggest snub was Leo in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. He has been great in almost everything he has done but that was his best performance and should have won the oscar.
